Herewith a corrected repetition.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Uruguay, the world\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s first country to legalize marijuana, is aiming to produce between six and 10 tons of pot a year for local use, a senior government official told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>National Drug Board chief Milton Romani told AFP in an interview that the pot would be distributed through pharmacies and sold to registered users at $1.40 a gram.<\/p>\n<p>Almost everything is set so that sales can begin, Romani said. Officials need to choose companies to distribute the weed, and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153we just need to fine-tune the software for registration and pharmacy sales,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2013, Uruguay approved a law that lets the state grant licenses to grow and harvest marijuana that will be sold to registered users through pharmacies.<\/p>\n<p>Under the law, Uruguayan citizens and residents can buy up to 40 grams (1.4 ounces) of weed a month from the pharmacies, grow it themselves at home, or join cannabis clubs where members jointly tend to the plants.<\/p>\n<p>Two companies were chosen in early October to grow and harvest marijuana.<\/p>\n<p>Romani said that they have a variety of weed native to Uruguay dubbed \u00e2\u20ac\u0153charrua cannabis.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Uruguay\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s football team is known as the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153charruas,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d which was the name of the indigenous people who formerly lived in the small South American country.<\/p>\n<p>The government estimates that there is \u00e2\u20ac\u0153a market of some 160,000 Uruguayans that frequently or occasionally consume marijuana,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Romani said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153That means, more or less, we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re talking about \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 some six, eight, ten tons a year\u00e2\u20ac\u009d of marijuana, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The law legalizing marijuana, introduced by former president Jose Mujica (2010-2015), was presented as an \u00e2\u20ac\u0153experiment\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u201d a concept that Romani emphasized remains in effect.<\/p>\n<p>He also said that there are 3,100 registered home growers, 15 pot clubs in the process of registration, and two that have already been approved.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign visitors however shouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t expect to travel to Uruguay in search of legal puffs of Mary Jane: only registered local users can access pot.<\/p>\n<ul id=\"topics\" class=\"hidden\">\n<li>Health<\/li>\n<li>Marijuana Abuse<\/li>\n<li>Uruguay<\/li>\n<li>marijuana<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- google_ad_section_end --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CORRECTS throughout to read 6-10 tons a xxx year xxx sted xxx month xxx after Mr Romani corrected his own statements.
