\u2018Whole grapes are ideally suited to cause paediatric airway obstruction and, though regularly implicated, knowledge that this popular fruit, and other similarly shaped foods, is a choking hazard is not widespread,\u2019 experts from Aberdeen Royal Infirmary wrote in a paper published in the journal\u00a0Archives of Disease in Childhood.<\/p>\n
\u2018We present the cases of three children who presented to our institution after grape aspiration. Increased dissemination of the learning points among health professionals working with children may aid in the prevention of further episodes.\u2019<\/p>\n
Because grapes are small and hard they can easily be dislodged from the rest of the upper airway in an adult and pass through the larynx, where they can settle in at the main bronchus \u2013 causing distress on a person\u2019s breathing.<\/p>\n
However, since a child\u2019s airway is small, a rouge grape can cause complete obstruction of breathing.<\/p>\n
The first case described in the study involved a 5 year old who began choking while eating whole grapes for a snack at an after school club.<\/p>\n Supervisors quickly began to dislodge the grape, but their attempts failed and the child went into cardiac arrest.<\/p>\n The grape was later removed by paramedics, using specialist equipment, but the child had already died.<\/p>\n Not only do small airways contribute to this chocking hazard, but children also do not have a full set of teeth to help them chew properly. Another problem is that children are easily distracted, which already puts them at a higher risk of chocking<\/p>\n In the second case, a 17 month old boy was eating sandwiches and fruit with his family at home, when he began to choke on a grape.<\/p>\n After those at the home failed to remove the grape, they contacted emergency services for help.<\/p>\n The grape was eventually removed by a paramedic, but, just like the first case, this child also died.<\/p>\n And in the third case, a 2 year old who was snacking on grapes in the park when he started choking.<\/p>\n Again, the grape proved impossible to dislodge, and an ambulance was called.<\/p>\n Paramedics were on the scene within a minute and successfully cleared the airway.<\/p>\n A five-year-old boy died after choking on a grape in front of his friends at an after-school club in February 2012.<\/p>\n Louis Emaho collapsed at the club in Newtonhill, Aberdeenshire that Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n The youngster was attending the group in the community centre when it is understood he began to choke on food.<\/p>\n Emergency services rushed to the scene after onlookers dialled 999.<\/p>\n A five-year-old boy died after choking on a grape in front of his friends at an after-school club in February 2012. Louis Emaho (pictured) collapsed at the club in Newtonhill, Aberdeenshire that Tuesday evening\u00a0<\/p>\n The schoolboy was then taken to the Royal Aberdeen Children\u2019s Hospital after the incident at the Bettridge Centre around 4pm.<\/p>\n Medics tried to save the Newtonhill Primary school pupil, but he died a short time later.<\/p>\n His parents Ghoot Emaho and Pauline Adams described their son as a \u2018bright, happy and bubbly child who always had a smile on his face\u2019.
