{"id":73892,"date":"2017-04-11T13:12:11","date_gmt":"2017-04-11T13:12:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/healthmedicinet.com\/news\/austrian-biotech-themis-launches-zika-vaccine-clinical-trial\/"},"modified":"2017-04-11T13:12:11","modified_gmt":"2017-04-11T13:12:11","slug":"austrian-biotech-themis-launches-zika-vaccine-clinical-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/healthmedicinet.com\/news\/austrian-biotech-themis-launches-zika-vaccine-clinical-trial\/","title":{"rendered":"Austrian biotech Themis launches Zika vaccine clinical trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span id=\"article-text\"><br \/><span id=\"midArticle_start\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"article-prime\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"articleLocatio\/spann\">Austrian biotech company Themis Bioscience said on Tuesday it had started a clinical trial of an experimental Zika vaccine in healthy volunteers, opening up another front in the race to prevent the spread of the mosquito-borne disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_1\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Themis\u2019s product, which is based on measles immunization technology, is the first vaccine containing attenuated, or weakened, live virus to reach the human testing phase.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_2\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>                <span class=\"article-divide first-article-divide\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Multiple research groups, biotech firms and pharmaceutical companies are working on different Zika vaccine approaches, but only a few have so far advanced into clinical trials.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_3\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>U.S.-based Inovio Pharmaceuticals announced in December that its experimental vaccine had induced robust immune responses in human volunteers, while U.S. government scientists are beginning the second phase of testing another vaccine.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_4\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>                <span class=\"article-divide second-article-divide\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Among big drugmakers, France\u2019s Sanofi has the most advanced Zika vaccine development program.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_5\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>                <span class=\"article-divide third-article-divide\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Themis, which is unlisted, said its Phase I clinical trial would involve 48 healthy volunteers and be conducted at the Medical University of Vienna. <\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_6\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Zika typically causes mild symptoms, but when the virus infects a pregnant women it can be passed to the foetus, causing a variety of birth defects including microcephaly, in which the baby\u2019s head is abnormally small. <\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_7\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> (Reporting by Ben Hirschler; editing by Jason Neely)<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_8\"><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Austrian biotech company Themis Bioscience said on Tuesday it had started a clinical trial of an experimental Zika vaccine in healthy volunteers, opening up another front in the race to prevent the spread of the mosquito-borne disease.
