next to it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">As the surrounding clocks were moved closer to the central clock, it became more difficult to tell the time, in an effect known as \u2018visual crowding.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The experiment revealed that the participants\u2019 varied significantly in their ability to correctly identify the central clock in a cluttered scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">While there was little difference between the left and right peripheral vision, the researchers found that most were weakest with their upper peripheral vision, followed by the lower.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The participants were also asked to move their eyes to where the center of the middle clock had been after it disappeared.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">And, the researchers found that the amount of disruption from the clutter and the ability to make precise eye movements to those locations were linked.<\/p>\n<p> vision,\u2019 says Dr Greenwood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018If you\u2019re looking for your keys, then this profile will affect your ability to find them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018For example, if your keys are on the table to the left of where you\u2019re focusing, the presence of books and papers on the table may stop you spotting the keys.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018Someone with strong left-sided vision could spot the keys even if they\u2019re right next to the book, whereas someone else might not notice the keys unless they\u2019re a foot away from the book.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018There is substantial variation between different people.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The researchers found that these \u2018islands\u2019 of poor vision carried across several tasks \u2013 even though the tasks used different processes in the brain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">This suggests that these differences may occur early in the visual system, possible eve as early as the retina.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But, it\u2019s still class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018What is striking is the consistency of the pattern from the first levels of vision up to the highest levels, processing that involves very different areas of the brain,\u2019 says senior author Professor Patrick Cavanagh, from Dartmouth College.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018We propose that these variations originate at the first levels of vision very early in our development where simple features like edges and colours are registered, and then are inherited by higher levels as the rest of the brain wires itself up to deal with the information being sent from the eyes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018The higher levels deal with recognizing objects, faces, and actions, and directing our eyes toward areas of interest.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">While visual crowding typically does not affect the center of vision, there are some conditions where this applies, such as amblyopia (also known as \u2018lazy eye\u2019) and dyslexia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018Our new paper helps us to better understand the mechanisms that cause visual crowding and where these occur in the visual system,\u2019 says Professor Cavanagh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018In the long term, we hope that this will help with the development of better treatment strategies for a wide
