Police condemn acts endangering public safety

Hong Kong (HKSAR) – At the Asia World Expo this morning (September 1), some protestors, who were not invited guests for events in the Expo, forcefully went through the visitor registration counter and security checkpoints outside a conference hall, pushed aside the mills barriers and charged the Police cordon line. They created chaos and caused safety hazards to the people at scene, including the protestors, reporters and police officers. Police condemned their acts that endangered public safety and public order.

Police reiterate that we respect the public’s freedoms of expression, speech and assembly. It is the policy of Police to facilitate all lawful and peaceful public events while at the same time ensuring public safety and public order.

Members of the public should comply with the laws of Hong Kong and maintain social order when expressing their views.

Police had urged the protestors to stay calm and express their views in a peaceful and rational manner for a number of times. However, they ignored Police’s appeals and warnings including warning banners. Police had no other options but to take resolute actions and use the appropriate and lowest level of force, including the use of OC Foam, to stop participants from charging Police¡¦s cordon line in a bid to ensure the safety of other people at scene and restore the order.

Police will conduct follow-up investigation and will not rule out the possibility of taking arrest action.

The Hong Kong community respect peaceful and lawful public meetings and processions. People should express their views in a rational and peaceful manner and any acts endangering public order and public safety will not be tolerated.
