New analytical techniques can show how different hair care products affect the hair, with some leaving isolated deposits behind and others leaving layers of material that wet the hair surface.
Researchers used atomic force microscopy in a variety of imaging modes to garner more detailed information and at smaller scales than has been presented before for hair product analyses. The methods can be used to study the varying effects of different hair care products.
“I was interested in doing this work to gain a better understanding of what is happening at the molecular level of hair when it is washed or treated, and wanted to base my judgments on more than marketing information,†said Dr. Colm Durkan, author of the International Journal of Cosmetic Science article. “I hope the manufacturers that carry out product development will see the benefit of adding the sort of measurements that we highlight in this article to their already impressive arsenal of measurement, characterization, and analysis tools.â€
