HMN 2025: How Brain construction is linked to social dominance recognized in squirrel monkeys

In a brand new JNeurosci paper, Julie Royo, from the Institute of Cerveau, and colleagues explored the neuroanatomy that underlies social dominance in nonhuman primates.

The researchers centered on mind tracts related to , motivation, and reminiscence as they assessed structural mind properties and behavioral measures of social dominance in 15 squirrel monkeys.

These behavioral measures had been associated to hierarchy, aggression, and submission. Royo and colleagues discovered that one of many mind tracts they centered on—the uncinate fasciculus—extremely correlated with their social dominance measures. This correlation was notably true for the uncinate fasciculus in the appropriate hemisphere of the mind.

These findings help linking this mind area to social aggression, suggesting this can be an evolutionarily conserved substrate for throughout species.
