Dutch food delivery company Just Eat Takeaway said on Thursday it will cut about 450 jobs as it integrates automation and artificial intelligence into its operations.
The reductions will affect several countries and functions, including in customer service and sales administration.
“By having a more streamlined approach, we believe we will be able to further enhance the experience for our consumers and partners,” the company said in a statement to AFP.
The Amsterdam-based company operates in 17 countries and employs tens of thousands of people as couriers, most of them part-time, according to its annual report.
It earns its revenue primarily from commissions charged to its restaurant partners, based on the value of orders made through its platform.
In August the company said it was partnering with Swiss robotics company RIVR to pilot doorstep delivery of food products with autonomous robots.
After a boom in home dining during the COVID pandemic that saw its share price soar, the company has since faced difficulties due to an increase in competition and a rise in the cost of living in some of its key markets.
In February, the Dutch investment group Prosus said it would buy Just Eat Takeaway.com for 4.1 million euros ($4.8 million), in order to create “a European technology champion”.
