HMN 2025: How state bans improve prices and delay abortion care

People in states which have banned abortion have been greater than twice as more likely to obtain them later in being pregnant, in keeping with a brand new study by researchers at UC San Francisco.

The delays are primarily as a result of extra time and prices related to touring longer distances to acquire care, in keeping with researchers from Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH) at UCSF. Delays could make abortion care extra complicated.

The study appears within the American Journal of Public Health, nearly three years to the date of the Supreme Court resolution that ended the constitutional proper to abortion.

Following the 2022 Supreme Court resolution, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, 14 states—Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia, and Wisconsin—adopted abortion bans.

The researchers surveyed 855 individuals from these states between 2022 and 2024. Among the findings:

• Second-trimester abortions elevated from 8% to 17%.
• Travel time went from 2.8 hours to 11.3 hours; in a single day stays elevated from 5% to 58%; and journey prices went up from $179 to $372.
• After the state ban, 81% of people that contacted a clinic or name middle reported touring out of state for an abortion. Just 3% carried their undesirable being pregnant to time period.

“Banning abortion does not get rid of the necessity; it simply forces individuals to journey farther and wait longer,” stated Diana Greene Foster, Ph.D., a UCSF demographer, professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences, and the research’s senior writer. “As we mark the third anniversary of the Dobbs resolution this week, it continues to be clear that abortion bans trigger hurt.”
