HMN 2025: How Prevalence, incidence of eczema enhance with severity of alopecia areata

Patients with higher-severity alopecia areata (AA) have the next prevalence and incidence of comorbid atopic dermatitis (AD), in line with a review published on-line June 26 within the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.

Christopher G. Bunick, M.D., Ph.D., from the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, and colleagues used knowledge from the Merative MarketScan Research Databases to look at the prevalence, incidence, and relative threat for comorbid AD amongst sufferers with AA. Eligible sufferers, aged 12 years or older, had a number of inpatient or two or extra outpatient claims for AA between Jan. 1, 2017, and Oct. 31, 2023. The prevalence of AD (share) and incidence (instances/1,000 person-years) have been reported amongst sufferers with AA and stratified by illness severity. A subgroup evaluation was carried out amongst adolescents aged 12 to 17 years.

The researchers discovered that the prevalence of AD was 3.2% amongst sufferers with AA at baseline (total prevalence in database, 12.1%), with most having moderate-to-severe AD; greater prevalence was seen amongst adolescents with AA (7.6%).

Regardless of age, the incidence of AD elevated with the severity of AA illness. Compared with these with gentle illness, these with moderate-to-severe AA had a 78% greater threat for being identified with AD. Regardless of AA severity, dermatologist-diagnosed sufferers had greater charges of comorbid AD.
