Most bizarre diet trends beloved by celebrities as Chris Martin admits he only has one meal a day

From eating a spoonful of clay every morning and taking shots of apple-cider vinegar to consuming raw meat and fasting for 18 hours, celebrities have gone through extreme measures and tried out some very bizarre diet trends in their attempts to stay in tip top shape.

Most recently, Coldplay singer Chris Martin revealed that he only has one meal a day – something he started doing after becoming jealous that Bruce Springsteen ‘was in better shape than him.’

His ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow has some strange eating habits of her own – she revealed earlier this month that she tends to skip breakfast, often sticks to a liquid lunch, and then has a very early dinner mostly consisting of vegetables.

And they’re not the only ones. Over the years, a series of huge stars have admitted to using some very unusual methods to lose weight and keep their toned physiques.

Actor Mark Wahlberg made headlines last year when he admitted that he follows a strict workout regimen and meal plan that sees him waking up at 3:30 in the morning, exercising for an hour and a half, and avoiding all food before 12pm and after 6pm.

Former football pro Tom Brady is also well-known for his odd food restrictions. He sticks to a diet that consists of 80 per cent vegetables and 20 per cent meal, and avoids everything that can potentially cause inflammation – like sugar, alcohol, caffeine, white flour, and even tomatoes and mushrooms.

Fashion icon Victoria Beckham’s husband, David Beckham, left people scratching their heads when he revealed last year that the former Spice Girl has eaten the same meal every day for the last 25 years.

As Chris joins the long list of celebrities to use unconventional diet techniques, FEMAIL went ahead and rounded up the weirdest health fads that the stars have sworn by over the years.

Chris recently revealed that he only eats one meal a day after he noticed that Bruce ‘was in better shape than him.’

The Coldplay frontman, 46, made the shocking admission during a recent appearance on Conan O’Brien’s Needs A Friend podcast, and he explained that he decided to cut back on his eating after he became envious of the 73-year-old singer’s amazing physique.

'I was on a really strict died anyway. But I was like, Bruce looks even more in shape than me,' Chris (seen last May) continued. When asked if he had dinner with any big stars recently, he told the host that he ‘doesn’t have dinner anymore’ because he doesn’t consume anything after 4pm – a tip he got from fellow musician Bruce.

‘I actually don’t have dinner anymore. I stop eating at four and I learned that from having lunch with Bruce Springsteen,’ he said.

The Head Full of Dreams star added that he was amazed by Bruce’s body and decided to ask him how he stays in such great shape during a lunch they shared after they performed together at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, last June.

‘I was on a really strict died anyway. But I was like, “Bruce looks even more in shape than me,”‘ he continued.

‘And Patti [Bruce’s wife] said he’s only eating one meal a day. I was like, “Well, there we go. That’s my next challenge.”‘

While Chris joked that his only meal of the day is usually ‘flank of buffalo with a steroid sauce,’ he didn’t share any further details about what he likes to eat.

The artist previously spoke out about being a fan of the 6:1 diet back in 2015, which involves eating normally for six days a week and fasting on the seventh day.

He told Fresh 102.7 at the time: ‘I fast once a week, yeah, one day a week.

‘This guy said to me, “Try not eating for a day, it will make your body feel healthier,” and I did it and I found I could sing a bit better, and also I felt so grateful for food.’

Gwyneth, who married Chris in 2003 but announced they were ‘consciously uncoupling’ in March 2014, has some strange eating habits of her own.

Earlier this month, she came under fire after sharing her ‘daily wellness routine’ – which consisted of intermittent fasting, liquid lunches, and an early dinner made mostly of vegetables.

The actress, 50, told Dr. Will Cole on his The Art of Being Well podcast that she skips breakfast – only consuming things that ‘won’t spike her blood sugar’ in the morning, like coffee – before having her first meal around 12pm, which is usually soup.

‘I do a nice intermittent fast. I usually eat something about 12 – and in the morning I have things that won’t spike my blood sugar so I have coffee,’ she explained.

‘I really like soup for lunch. I have bone broth for lunch a lot of the days. [Then I] try to do one hour of movement, so I’ll either take a walk or I’ll do Pilates or I’ll do my Tracy Anderson.

‘And then I dry brush and I get in the sauna. So I do my infrared sauna for 30 minutes and then I eat dinner early in the evening.

‘For dinner I try to eat according to paleo – so lots of vegetables. It’s really important for me to support my detox.’

The paleo diet is based on foods that people ate during the Paleolithic Era – which dates back to 2.5 million years ago – and includes mostly fruits, vegetables, lean meats, fish, eggs, nuts, and seeds, according to MayoClinic.

A clip of the interview was shared to TikTok and it quickly went viral, gaining more than 1.8 million views and sparking a slew of backlash from online users.

One person wrote, ‘Is starving wellness?’ while another added, ‘I feel light headed just listening to this.’

And a third simply said: ‘I relate to nothing in this video.’

While addressing the criticism on Instagram a few days later, the star explained that she switched to the diet after she started suffering from ”very high levels of inflammation’ due to long COVID.

‘I think it’s important for everybody to know that I was doing a podcast with my doctor,’ she said in a video shared to her Stories.

‘So, this is a person I’ve been working with for over two years now to deal with some chronic stuff.

‘I’ve been working with Dr. Cole to really focus on foods that aren’t inflammatory. So, lots of cooked vegetables, all kinds of protein, healthy carbs to really lower inflammation. It’s been working really well.’

She added that they came up with the meal plan together after ‘extensive testing’ and that it ‘wasn’t meant to be advice’ for anyone else.

‘It’s really just what has worked for me, and it’s been very powerful and very positive,’ she concluded.

‘This is not to say I eat this way all day, every day. And by the way, I eat far more than bone broth and vegetables.

‘I eat full meals, and I also have a lot of days of eating whatever I want. You know, eating French fries and whatever.

‘My baseline has been to try to be healthy and eat foods that will really calm the system down.’

He told the Wall Street Journal last year that he only recently started drinking espresso – which he uses to suppress his appetite during his long fasts, which last from 6pm until 12pm the following day.

The Transformers star dished on his intense routine back in November, and he said it was actually a step down from his former plan – which saw him get up at 2:30am and plough through up to eight meals a day.

He added that his new, ‘dialed-down’ regimen is giving him ‘better results’ without having to do as much cardio or spend as long in the gym.

Marks works out for about an hour and a half every morning, and while he varies his exercises depending on upcoming roles, he generally focuses on weight training.

He then likes to hit the golf course, before having his first meal sometime after 12pm.

He is known to follow a high-protein diet consisting mostly of turkey burgers, egg whites, meatballs, and chicken. His carbohydrate sources are normally rice, potatoes, and oats.

The movie star added that he never eats past 6pm – which means he spends 18 hours fasting – and he tries to always go to bed at 7:30pm sharp to ensure he gets eight hours of sleep.

While Tom chalks up his immense success on the field to his diet, some have cast doubts on the effectiveness of it – pointing out that it is not rooted in much scientific evidence.

While research on nightshades and their effects on inflammation is still minimal, experts say there is no known link between them and tissue swelling.

She told Into the Gloss in 2014: ‘It provides a negative charge, so it bonds to negative isotopes. It also helps clean heavy metals out of your body’

‘Clay is one of the best things you can put in your body,’ she told Into the Gloss in 2014.

‘I first heard about the benefits of eating clay from a taxi driver. He was African and was saying that, where he’s from, the women eat clay when they’re pregnant.

‘I’ve discovered that clay is great for you because your body doesn’t absorb it, and it apparently provides a negative charge, so it bonds to negative isotopes. It also helps clean heavy metals out of your body.’

As for the type of clay she likes to consume, the 31-year-old actress revealed that Bentonite clay is her go to.

‘Mountain Rose Herbs has a great clay source,’ added Shailene.

While chatting with David Letterman on his Late Show a year later, she added that she usually has around one teaspoon of clay a day.

According to WebMD, ‘People use clay for diarrhea and other stomach disorders, mouth sores, detoxification, and other conditions – but there is no good scientific evidence to support most of these uses.’

‘Clay might bind to certain metals and prevent them from being absorbed by the stomach and intestines,’ it added.

‘This might help treat or prevent poisoning due to toxic metals such as mercury. Clay might also protect cells in the intestines by covering them.’

Last year, Heidi Montag left the world stunned when she was photographed biting into a raw piece of meat.

She also shared videos of herself cutting up bison liver with scissors and eating tiny cubes of it, as well as a clip of herself nibbling on raw bull testicles.

When asked about the bizarre eating habit days later by People magazine, the reality star, 36, explained that she started consuming uncooked organs in an attempt to improve her fertility.

‘I have been trying to get pregnant for over a year and a half. I’m willing to try different things,’ she said.

‘It’s a great source of nutrients. I have felt incredible on this diet. A lot more energy, clarity, increased libido and overall improvement on chronic pain I have had.

‘When you think about where the most nutrients are that are bioavailable to humans without toxins, organs are very nutritious parts of animals.

‘Culturally organs are a critical part. Eating raw liver is going to preserve as many nutrients as possible. I just happen to like eating sushi-style organs.’

‘Unfortunately I’m married to someone that has eaten the same thing for the last 25 years.

The 36-year-old admitted in 2008 that she’s not a fan of ‘dieting or exercising,’ and that instead, she uses apple-cider vinegar – made from fermented apple juice – to stay slim.

‘It’s just water and raw apple cider vinegar, and it just cleans out your system entirely,’ she explained in 2008.

‘It will get rid of, for women who retain water weight, from your menstrual cycle and all that, it gets rid of it really fast.

‘I’m not one for dieting or exercising, ‘cause I’m lazy and I have a really big sweet tooth, so I have to do cleanses every once in a while ‘cause of the amount of sugar I take in.’

According to Mayo Clinic, ‘Apple cider vinegar isn’t likely to be effective for weight loss.

‘Proponents of apple cider vinegar claim that it has numerous health benefits and that drinking a small amount or taking a supplement before meals helps curb appetite and burn fat. However, there’s little scientific support for these claims.’
