More than 40 patients have already undergone the procedure \u2013 with remarkable results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Short stents have been used for decades in blocked arteries to help treat heart problems.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"rotator-panels link-bogr1 linkro-ccox\">\n<li>\n<p>          <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/i\/pix\/2016\/06\/14\/12\/35410EB800000578-0-image-a-9_1465904538297.jpg\" width=\"62\" height=\"60\" \/><span>&#8216;Make sure they don&#8217;t get away with this&#8217;: Grandmother&#8217;s&#8230;<\/span><br \/>\n        <\/a><\/p>\n<p>          <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/i\/pix\/2016\/04\/26\/17\/2400693600000578-0-image-a-92_1461687289293.jpg\" width=\"62\" height=\"60\" \/><span>Coroner brands district nursing team &#8216;unfit for service&#8217;&#8230;<\/span><br \/>\n        <\/a>\n      <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But keeping a vein open is much harder because the blood pressure is lower, the veins are wider and are much more liable to clotting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Advances in engineering and surgical techniques, however, have meant it is now possible to make stents that can keep a vein open and stay in the body for a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Costing \u00a32,500 each and measuring almost five inches (12cm) long, the stents are made from a titanium-nickel compound invented by NASA for its space programme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">One patient, 34-year-old Hannah Almond, could barely walk before she had the 90-minute operation at University College London Hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Since the procedure, her recovery has been so dramatic that she has started running for the first time in 11 years. Mrs Almond developed a clot during a flight to the Maldives when she was pregnant with her first son, William, who is now 13.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">For 11 years she was in agony and gave up on her dream of becoming a teacher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But two years ago she was one of the first to undergo the world-first stent procedure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Three stents were inserted into the vein running from her leg to her abdomen, pushed end to end until a section of vein a foot long was reconstructed. The UCLH team is taking part in a much larger international trial, which has tested the stents on more than 200 patients around the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The overall findings are due to be published next year, but Professor Toby Richards, who is leading the London branch of the study, said the results so far have been remarkable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018Two thirds of the participants so far have been able to go back to work,\u2019 he said. \u2018From being pretty much housebound, that is a major achievement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018These are often young people, with their lifetimes ahead of them.
