Disappointed with the reaction of the AMA, the leading doctor\u2019s group in the country, they\u2019ve decided to form their own organization.<\/p>\n<p>Their first step was a call to action \u2014 a post on Medium, a blogging platform, entitled, \u201cThe AMA Does Not Speak for Us.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Three young physicians from the University of Pennsylvania \u2014 Drs. Manik Chhabra, Navin Vij and Jane Zhu, who are practicing physicians as well as health care policy researchers \u2014 wrote that President-elect Trump\u2019s decision to nominate former orthopedic surgeon Rep. Dr. Tom Price, a Republican congressman from Georgia, to lead HHS is a major concern. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"gallery overlay-video\"><span class=\"img \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cbsnews1.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2016\/11\/10\/470ba114-2a0b-448b-858b-f4f88808a256\/thumbnail\/380x240\/e3f117c344b0e0d54beebf333864cbc1\/1110-cbsn-zff-obamacare-1178062-640x360.jpg\" alt=\"What's going to happen to Obamacare?\" height=\"240\" width=\"380\" class=\" lazyload\" \/><\/span><figcaption>\n                <span class=\"topic\">CBSN<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"title\">What&#8217;s going to happen to Obamacare?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"dek\">\n                                            President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to repeal President Obama&#8217;s landmark health care legislation, the Affordable Care Act. Betsey McCaughey, f&#8230;\n                                    <\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Price is a firm opponent of the Affordable Care Act<\/a> and, if confirmed, his job will be to spearhead the effort to repeal and replace President Barack Obama\u2019s health care law.<\/p>\n<p>The AMA was quick to endorse Price and urged his swift confirmation.<\/p>\n<p>The Penn doctors wrote in their letter to the medical community and their colleagues: \u201cThe AMA represents approximately a quarter of physicians in the US ?\u2014 ?a loud, but minority voice. It certainly does not speak for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They went on to say, \u201cWe believe that in issuing this statement of support for Dr. Price, the AMA has reneged on a fundamental pledge that we as physicians have taken? \u2014 ?to protect and advance care<\/a> for our patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vij and Zhu spoke with CBS News about their efforts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe support patient choice,\u201d Zhu said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gallery overlay-gallery\"><span class=\"img \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cbsnews3.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2016\/11\/18\/c0623f15-12c4-4abf-9113-c964e6f88c0c\/thumbnail\/380x240g2\/bd8a45dcd78ad8cd42d8ea1d26bb6507\/gettyimages-622159424.jpg\" alt=\"Trump's team\" height=\"240\" width=\"380\" class=\" lazyload\" \/><\/span><figcaption>\n<h3 class=\"title\">Trump&#8217;s team<\/h3>\n<p class=\"dek\">\n                                            See who President-elect Donald Trump wants in his inner circle at the White House\n                                    <\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>She said Price\u2019s proposed policies threaten to harm vulnerable patients, including children covered by CHIP, the Children\u2019s Health Insurance Program, who are mostly poor and who depend on the program for preventive health care.<\/p>\n<p>Eliminating Obamacare and other policy changes would also limit access to health care<\/a> for many Americans, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Vij and Zhu dropped their AMA memberships in recent years. Along with Chhabra, they came up with the idea for the new organization, named the Clinician Action Network, or CAN, in the week after the election. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout 60-plus colleagues of ours were sitting talking in a room about what the potential policies would mean not only for how we practice, but for our patients. We decided to come together,\u201d Vij said.<\/p>\n<p>In just two weeks, the group has swelled to 3,500 members, he said, and as of today, more than 5,400 physicians and other health care providers have signed their petition.<\/p>\n<p>Vij describes their membership as \u201ca diverse group of clinicians \u2014physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers and pharmacists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The three founders have been practicing physicians for three to five years, they said, and while they\u2019re still getting a handle on the demographics of CAN\u2019s new membership, Vij said, \u201cWe know from direct conversations and from colleagues that we tend to be a little younger group, in our thirties and forties, but we have all age ranges. We have several members who\u2019ve been practicing for decades and some fresh out of training.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said CAN\u2019s members also work in a wide range of practice settings \u2014 rural and urban, large academic centers and smaller hospitals, clinics and private practices.<\/p>\n<p>CAN\u2019s goal isn\u2019t to block Price\u2019s confirmation, Zhu said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not na\u00efve. We know there are other political priorities our Congress is focusing on. But we want to show our physicians\u2019 organization that there are a number of physicians out there that feel Dr. Price\u2019s policies are going to harm patients and we\u2019ll do everything in our power to make sure that doesn\u2019t happen,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The last few years have seen a lot of progress, said Vij, adding, \u201cPrice\u2019s policies are a direct threat to our patients and the environment in which we practice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CAN plans to address policies on both the federal and state levels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to be watching legislation very carefully and be very responsive to what\u2019s going on and protect patients and we plan to make sure with each policy, that steps backward aren\u2019t taken and that decreased access to care does not occur. We\u2019ll be paying attention, making sure there\u2019s no ACA repeal without replacement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zhu added, \u201cWe are not partisan. We don\u2019t identify with Republicans or Democrats. We identify with patients. If patients will benefit we are in full support of that.
