Women now have fewer children than they did 70 years ago but populations are still on the rise in more than half of countries, data revealed today.<\/p>\n
A huge study has compiled statistics of the countries where women have the most and the fewest children around the world.<\/p>\n
Cyprus has the lowest birth rate, with women averaging just one child each, whereas mothers in Niger in Africa give birth to seven children each, on average.<\/p>\n
The UK, US and Australia are among the 91 countries where women have fewer than two children each, with average rates of 1.7, 1.8 and 1.9 each, respectively.<\/p>\n
Experts say some nations are seeing baby ‘booms’ while others are going baby ‘bust’, pointing to education and employment for bringing down birth rates.<\/p>\n

The population of the earth has been rising by around 87million people every year since 2007 and only 14 per cent of those people \u2013 one in seven \u2013 are born in high income countries. Countries in Africa, plus Afghanistan, make up the entire top 10 of countries with the highest birth rates<\/p>\n
‘These statistics represent both a “baby boom” for some nations and a “baby bust” for others,’ said Dr Christopher Murray, from the University of Washington.<\/p>\n
‘The lower rates of women’s fertility clearly reflect not only access to and availability of reproductive health services.<\/p>\n
‘But also many women choosing to delay or forgo giving birth, as well as having more opportunities for education and employment.’<\/p>\n
Research included in the annual Global Burden of Disease study today showed the findings \u2013 the research examines births, diseases and deaths around the world.<\/p>\n
