As a result, levels of the hormones the ovaries produce \u2014 oestrogen (shown in graphic), progesterone and testosterone \u2014 drop<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The NHS advises people who suffer side effects to continue to try and persevere for three months if possible as they can stop as the body gets used to the medication.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">However, women should contact their GP if they suffer \u2018severe\u2019 side effects or if they persist beyond three months.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Dr Harper said: \u2018Expectations are too high for a quick fix, and so many are not aware that it may take time to settle and not to rush to too high a dose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018I recommend start low and go slow\u00a0\u2014 if you experience side effects or problems talk to your [healthcare professional]. You should be supported by your doctor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018A common phrase I use to my patients is, \u201cI know that there can be a few bumps in the road when starting on your HRT journey- but I\u2019m here to support you\u201d.\u2019<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"mol-factbox-title\">WHAT IS THE MENOPAUSE?\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Menopause is when a woman stops having periods naturally and is no longer able to get pregnant naturally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It is a normal part of ageing and usually happens between the ages of 45 and 55 when a woman\u2019s levels of the sex hormone oestrogen drop.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Eight in 10 women will experience menopausal symptoms including hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, difficulty sleeping, low mood or anxiety and problems with memory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Women are advised to see their GP if their symptoms are difficult to manage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Treatments doctors can provide include hormone replacement therapy, such as tablets, skin patches and gels that replace oestrogen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Source: NHS<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She said that most women \u2018do definitely feel the benefits of HRT\u2019 but finding the best option for each person can take a while.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Dr Harper said: \u2018Few women are sensitive and may not be able to tolerate HRT then options like anti-depressants can be equally good \u2014 anti depressants shouldn\u2019t be written off.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She warned people not to \u2018suddenly stop\u2019 taking HRT as this can cause rebound symptoms, so people should instead talk to their doctor and wean off their dose.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Dr Harper added: \u2018I think unfortunately Nicola stopped without guidance and without knowing the potential side effects that can come when one starts taking HRT.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018HRT is not a quick fix and it doesn\u2019t suit everyone.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Some women are unable to take HRT, including those with breast, ovarian or womb cancer, untreated high blood pressure, liver disease or a history of blood clots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">And some decide not to take it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The NHS advocates regular exercise, a healthy diet as well as cutting down on coffee, alcohol and spicy foods and stopping smoking as alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" id=\"i-abdfa4d0a6329a25\" src=\"\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2022\/11\/01\/16\/57566187-11377437-image-a-2_1667320832314.jpg\" height=\"1032\" width=\"304\" alt=\"The great HRT debate | Daily Mail Online - dailymail - Health - Public News Time\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" title=\"The great HRT debate | Daily Mail Online - dailymail - Health - Public News Time\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It also suggests\u00a0tibolone\u00a0\u2014 a medicine similar to combined HRT\u00a0\u2014 along with antidepressants, which can help with hot flushes and night sweats, and clonidine \u2014 a non-hormonal medicine which may ease symptoms for some women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">And some complementary therapies\u00a0\u2014 such as the plants black cohosh and St John\u2019s wort\u00a0\u2014 may help reduce hot flushes, according to the health service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But it warns that \u2018many\u2019 complementary therapies are not supported by evidence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Jennifer Young, who founded menopause skincare bran Menopause Plus and trains organisations to become menopause friendly, told MailOnline that HRT can be \u2018wonderful\u2019 for some women but \u2018isn\u2019t suitable for others\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018HRT benefits those who can and want to use it by smoothing the declining levels of hormones associated with the menopausal years,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But her company estimates that around 7million in the UK don\u2019t want to use HRT \u2014 either because of a medical condition or because they prefer a \u2018natural approach\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She said: \u2018These women turn to evidence-based complementary therapies and benefit from lifestyle changes.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Ms Young said: \u2018HRT isn\u2019t the only solution for those who can use it and, many of those who can, prefer not to.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018Menopause and its treatments are not a binary issue \u2013 both affect different women in different ways.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018It is important to listen to women, to respect their privacy and preferences, understanding them, helping them find a path that suits them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018As with all medication designed to be taken in the long-term, if you are thinking of coming off it, you should always speak to your doctor first.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Women can get a prescription for HRT as soon as they start experiencing menopausal symptoms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Doctors tend to dish out a low dose initially, which can be increased later, and recommend trying the treatment for three months to see if it helps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">If women decide to stop taking HRT, medics recommend doing so gradually as it is less likely to cause symptoms to come back in the short-term.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Davina McCall-inspired menopause revolution has triggered a surge in women wanting to take hormone replacement therapy (HRT) over the past few years.
