controversial policy stating the Government\u2019s dementia drive is \u2018pointless\u2019 and \u2018only serves to increase distress for patients and families.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Campaigners described the move as a \u2018disappointing step backwards\u2019 and stressed GPs should never be discouraged from detecting the devastating illness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">An estimated 850,000 adults in Britain have dementia although only about half have received a formal diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Dr Richard Vautrey, deputy chair of the BMA\u2019s GPs committee, and a GP in Leeds said: \u2018I think the key concern that GPs have is that there\u2019s been a focus on counting numbers and hitting targets, rather than what we see is the real gap in service, which is providing services to patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018This is both in terms of diagnosis, investigation but then crucially Then there\u2019s a crisis and they end up in hospital<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018Why do we put families through this and why do we think that early diagnosis and the promise of this in your future is a good thing?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Dr Gary Wannan, chair of the BMA\u2019s community care committee, and a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist in Kensington, Central London said: \u2018There\u2019s no point in giving someone a label, but then not being able to provide support.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But Professor Alistair Burns, NHS England\u2019s National Clinical Director for Dementia, said: \u2018Awareness of dementia is at its highest and we believe that timely diagnosis of dementia allows people to access the emotional, practical and financial support that brings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018We want it to be normal to talk about memory problems and to encourage people to come forward for an
