Scientists claim this obsession is caused by an abnormality in the brain, which stops sufferers realizing they are killing themselves<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In a study of structural brain connectivity, the researchers found more connective abnormalities in anorexic patients than others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">These abnormalities were spotted in brain regions linked to error detection, conflict monitoring and self-reflection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It suggests their brains may not generate an \u2018error message\u2019 to prevent life-threatening behavior.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The human brain normally spots high-risk behavior, and triggers an instinctive survival reaction.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"rotator-panels link-bogr1 linkro-ccox\">\n<li>\n<p>          <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/i\/pix\/2016\/06\/22\/10\/358AB93600000578-0-image-m-10_1466587404859.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"62\" height=\"60\" \/><span>Mother-of-three terrified her husband found her baby weight\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/i\/pix\/2016\/06\/10\/10\/351E47FF00000578-0-image-m-20_1465550610070.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"62\" height=\"60\" \/><span>From 5 stone to bodybuilding champion: Anorexic who weighed\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But according to lead author Dr Alex Leow: \u2018It is plausible that their brains literally don\u2019t believe that they are severely underweight and their behavior is dangerous even when objective evidence suggests otherwise.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The abnormal brain network in people with anorexia nervosa comprises several brain regions, including the caudal anterior cingulate and the posterior cingulate, which have been shown in other studies to be crucial for error detection, conflict monitoring, and self-reflection.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">For example, the caudal anterior cingulate is hyperactive in people with obsessive compulsive disorder, who may perceive problems where none exist, such as thinking the door may be unlocked even after checking it numerous times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018Our results suggest that in order to have insight, you have to be able to see a conflict or error when your perceptions differ from those of others, or from reality,\u2019 Leow said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018For example, in people with anorexia nervosa, that conflict might be, \u201cI may actually be way too thin, even if I think I am still fat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018Next, they need to be able to reflect on that conflict and what it means.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018If they can, this insight can lead to adaptive decisions, such as \u201cHey, I need to get help to change my behavior and get healthy,\u201d and then that person has a better chance of recovering.<\/p>\n<p>      <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-1fe02466bf268703\" src=\"http:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/i\/pix\/2016\/07\/20\/14\/3671231100000578-0-image-a-4_1469019858779.jpg\" height=\"422\" width=\"634\" alt=\"The brain abnormalities were spotted in regions linked to error detection, conflict monitoring and self-reflection\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">The brain abnormalities were spotted in regions linked to error detection, conflict monitoring and self-reflection<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018But without that insight, they are stuck.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Leow and her colleagues explored differences and similarities in brain connectivity patterns in 24 weight-restored individuals with anorexia nervosa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Those 24 participants met all criteria for anorexia except for amenorrhea \u2013 stunted menstruation \u2013 and all had body mass indices (BMI) of 18.5 or higher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They also had 29 participants with body dysmorphic disorder, and 31 healthy control participants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">None were receiving psychiatric medication at the time of the study. Insight and delusionality were measured using specialized questionnaires.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Leow said the selection criteria for participants were carefully chosen, because long-term starvation itself has a profound impact on the brain and could contribute to abnormal connectivity in brain networks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018We didn\u2019t study individuals who were currently very underweight, because we didn\u2019t want active starvation to impact our results,\u2019 she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018In that case, we wouldn\u2019t really be sure if network abnormalities were caused by the disease itself, or if they simply reflected current effects of starvation on the central nervous system.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The researchers imaged each participant\u2019s brain using structural magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion-weighted imaging.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Next, they constructed maps for each participant that showed which areas of the brain exhibited high levels of connectivity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They found that connectivity in the caudal anterior cingulate and the posterior cingulate were poorly connected with the rest of the brain in those with anorexia nervosa compared to healthy participants. Participants with worse insight scores had worse integration of these areas in the brain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The researchers also found that individuals with anorexia nervosa had abnormal, overlapping brain networks involved in reward and compulsive behaviors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018This could relate to the observation that many anorexics experience a rewarding feeling from \u201csuccessfully\u201d carrying out compulsive exercising, restricting, achieving specific weight goals,\u2019 said Leow.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Participants with body dysmorphic disorder showed similar but weaker abnormalities in the same regions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Improving anorexics\u2019 ability to detect the mismatch between their perceptions of self and reality may be the key to helping some recover, said Leow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018We may be able to teach insight to these patients using different tools or techniques including virtual or augmented reality technologies,\u2019 Leow said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">A candidate approach is to \u2018amplify\u2019 the error signals, she said. \u2018Many anorexic patients with poor insight are able to understand someone else\u2019s severe restricting is very dangerous for that person, but they can\u2019t see it for themselves even when they are doing exactly the same thing,\u2019 Leow said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Providing better visual feedback signals could be a way to get the error message across.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anorexic people have an abnormality in their brain that means they cannot recognize the disease is harming them, a new study claims.
