{"id":50632,"date":"2016-10-11T10:49:44","date_gmt":"2016-10-11T10:49:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/healthmedicinet.com\/news\/anti-gay-sentiment-seen-threatening-indonesias-goal-to-end-aids-by-2030\/"},"modified":"2016-10-11T10:49:44","modified_gmt":"2016-10-11T10:49:44","slug":"anti-gay-sentiment-seen-threatening-indonesias-goal-to-end-aids-by-2030","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/healthmedicinet.com\/news\/anti-gay-sentiment-seen-threatening-indonesias-goal-to-end-aids-by-2030\/","title":{"rendered":"Anti-gay sentiment seen threatening Indonesia\u2019s goal to end AIDS by 2030"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span id=\"article-text\"><br \/><span id=\"midArticle_start\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_0\"><\/span><span class=\"article-prime\"><\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (Thomson Reuters Foundation) \u2013 Growing anti-gay sentiment in Indonesia could hamper efforts to combat fast-rising HIV infections among one of the most at-risk groups, threatening the country\u2019s target to end an AIDS epidemic by 2030, a senior official has warned.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span id=\"midArticle_1\"><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>Although new infections have been falling globally, Indonesia is one country where they are on the rise as the disease spreads rapidly among gay men and other men who have had sex with men (MSM) over the past decade.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_2\"><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>HIV prevalence among the group jumped to 25.8 percent in 2015 from 5.4 percent in 2007, according to Indonesia\u2019s National AIDS Commission.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_3\"><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn terms of number, MSM is the fastest growing (group),\u201d the commission\u2019s secretary Kemal Siregar told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_4\"><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>Asia Pacific is home to the second highest number of people living with HIV in the world, with India, Indonesia and China accounting for around three quarters of new infections in 2015, according to the U.N\u2019s AIDS agency UNAIDS.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_5\"><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>South Africa has the highest number of people living with HIV in the world.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_6\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <span class=\"article-divide first-article-divide\"><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>UNAIDS estimates there are around 690,000 people living with HIV in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_7\"><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>Siregar said there was now \u201cuncertainty\u201d over meeting Indonesia\u2019s target to end an AIDS epidemic by 2030 as efforts to reach out to the MSM group \u2013 who he described as \u201chidden population\u201d \u2013 had become harder due to increasing social stigma.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_8\"><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>This follows a backlash against Indonesia\u2019s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_9\"><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>This was also exacerbated by a drop in foreign funding as Indonesia\u2019s economy grew and international donors withdrew. External funding was a key resource for HIV prevention work.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_10\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <span class=\"article-divide second-article-divide\"><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the funding is not there, it\u2019s very hard to reach this group because the government\u2019s funding is mostly for treatment, for medicines, not for prevention,\u201d the official said.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_11\"><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>The LGBT community had long been tolerated in Indonesia, especially in urban areas but a backlash suddenly began in January after a minister said the community was banned from university campuses. <\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_12\"><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>Attacks against the LGBT community quickly grew, with ministers and religious leaders denouncing homosexuality, prompting criticism from human rights group.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_13\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>            <span class=\"article-divide third-article-divide\"><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>The government said in August there was \u201cno room\u201d for the LGBT movement in the Southeast Asia nation.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_14\"><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>Siregar said the commission has intensified its efforts to reach out to the MSM group and planned to establish MSM-friendly clinics outside the 10 cities where they are currently located.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_15\"><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have to know this community, they have to reduce the stigma and have the communication skills to communicate with this group,\u201d Siregar said.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_0\"><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>Since the first HIV case was reported in Indonesia in 1987, 13,449 people have died from the disease, according to the latest health ministry data as of March this year.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_1\"><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_2\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p> (Reporting by Beh Lih Yi @behlihyi, Editing by Belinda Goldsmith; Please credit the Thomson Reuters Foundation, the charitable arm of Thomson Reuters, that covers humanitarian news, women\u2019s rights, trafficking, property rights and climate change.
