According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10038119\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2022 animal study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, all SSRIs\u2014including fluoxetine\u2014showed the ability to affect the production of hormones including estrogen, progesterone, and androgens when tested in the laboratory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This very small animal study demonstrated that when mice were given high doses of fluoxetine their reproductive cycles were altered. At high doses, fluoxetine was associated with irregular cycles, fewer corpus luteum (involved in progesterone production in early pregnancy), decreased follicle development, and reduced ovulation. The study also found an association between increased estrogen concentration and taking fluoxetine\u2014which may affect other reproductive hormones including gonadotropin hormone-releasing hormone (controls the production of sex hormones), follicle-stimulating hormone (plays a role in sexual development and reproduction), and luteinizing hormone (controls the menstrual cycle in women).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers recommended caution for women and girls of reproductive age using fluoxetine. However, because this research has only been performed in animals, it\u2019s uncertain if the same conclusions would apply to human subjects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe vast majority of findings in animal studies do not translate to humans,\u201d says Bruce Bassi, MD, the medical director at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telepsychhealth.com\/meet-our-providers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TelepsychHealth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cI would not put a lot of weight on a study that looked at such a small sample size (6\/7 per group).\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, more evidence is needed to support any conclusions about how fluoxetine affects hormonal balance in human females.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"long-term-fluoxetine-side-effects-in-women\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-term fluoxetine side effects in women<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When women are on fluoxetine for six to 10 years or longer, they have reported long-term <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/clinicalneuropharm\/abstract\/2002\/01000\/side_effects_of_long_term_treatment_with.10.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restlessness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tension<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agitation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep disturbances<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low sex drive (which may persist even after discontinuation)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also report <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/22354-low-estrogen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low estrogen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014which can trigger or contribute to painful vaginal intercourse, hot flashes, irregular periods, and more\u2014but the data on fluoxetine\u2019s impact on estrogen is conflicting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome data supports that Prozac can decrease estrogen levels, but it is unclear why,\u201d Dr. Bassi says. \u201cThe evidence is conflicting, as other studies showed an increase.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the medication insert, when discontinuing use of Prozac, whether they\u2019ve taken it long-term or not, women should do so under the supervision of a healthcare provider. \u201cA gradual reduction in the dose rather than abrupt cessation is recommended whenever possible,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dralishareed.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alisha Reed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0 Pharm.D., a pharmacist based in New Orleans, Louisiana.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients should be monitored for potential withdrawal symptoms or worsening mood. These symptoms include dysphoric mood, irritability, agitation, dizziness, sensory disturbances (e.g., electric shock sensations), anxiety, confusion, headache, lethargy, emotional lability, insomnia, and hypomania. \u201cWhile these reactions are generally self-limiting,\u201d Dr. Reed says, \u201cthere have been reports of serious discontinuation symptoms.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-fluoxetine-side-effects-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do fluoxetine side effects last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some side effects are temporary and may disappear after your body adjusts to the medication. For instance, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/medicines\/fluoxetine-prozac\/side-effects-of-fluoxetine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the suppression of appetite experienced in the first two to three months of taking fluoxetine slowly goes away with time, such that in six months, the person\u2019s appetite returns to normal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Dr. Javier says that adjusting to fluoxetine is a unique experience for each individual. \u201cSome [people] may notice some mild improvement in symptoms as early as two weeks, such as changes in sleep, appetite, and energy,\u201d she says. \u201cHowever, a more common timeline is around four to eight weeks, especially for symptoms of low mood, lack of motivation, and lack of interest in activities.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-treat-side-effects-of-fluoxetine-in-females\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to treat side effects of fluoxetine in females<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/womens-health\/when-an-ssri-medication-impacts-your-sex-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effect of fluoxetine for women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is sexual dysfunction. If you suspect that fluoxetine is affecting your sex life, do not stop the medication without informing your healthcare provider, who may recommend reducing the dose or changing medications. If you experience suicidal thoughts, seek emergency help immediately or call 988.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some side effects may go away as your body gets used to the drug; however, it is a good idea to speak with your healthcare provider about new symptoms while using this medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-avoid-fluoxetine-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to avoid fluoxetine side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like most prescription drugs, fluoxetine can trigger unwanted side effects. There are a number of strategies you can try to minimize the risk of fluoxetine side effects:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Take fluoxetine at a certain time of day<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; this time will depend on the side effects you experience. For example, taking it in the morning can minimize the risk of insomnia. Then, take the medication at the same time every day.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Work with your provider to find the right dose. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re having side effects, you may need a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher or lower dosage<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Fluoxetine can be taken at doses as low as 20 mg daily.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tell your provider and pharmacist about all other medications and supplements you take<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which will help you avoid drug interactions. Prozac should not be taken with antidepressants such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or thioridazine serotonergic drugs (such as triptans, tricyclic antidepressants, and St. John\u2019s Wort).
