Adderall can be an essential tool for improving the daily executive functioning of people with ADHD. It helps with thinking more clearly, focusing energy on singular projects, and coping better with everyday challenges like impulsivity and hyperactivity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it\u2019s understandable if you have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concerns about taking Adderall<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to possible adverse side effects. To better understand this medication, we spoke with two experts about how Adderall works and its short-term and long-term effects on the body.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-adderall\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Adderall?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a brand-name drug; its generic is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amphetamine-dextroamphetamine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Both are a combination of amphetamine salts: dextroamphetamine and amphetamine, according to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.doctoralex.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex Dimitriu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, founder of Menlo Park Psychiatry &amp; Sleep Medicine. It\u2019s FDA approved for the treatment of ADHD and narcolepsy, but it\u2019s sometimes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescribed off-label as a weight loss drug<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The drug works by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stimulating the central nervous system<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> thereby increasing the amounts of certain neurotransmitters (norepinephrine and dopamine) in the brain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-effects-of-adderall-on-the-body\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The effects of Adderall on the body<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No two people taking Adderall will have the same response to the drug. Dr. Dimitriu notes this is especially true for people with ADHD versus people without ADHD (i.e., people taking Adderall for narcolepsy or off-label uses).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGenerally speaking, the side effects of Adderall are more problematic in non-ADHD users,\u201d Dr. Dimitriu says. However, he explains that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anyone<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> taking Adderall may experience common side effects, such as increased energy, alertness, elevated heart rate and blood pressure, dry mouth, and decreased appetite.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"short-term-effects-of-adderall-on-the-body\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Short-term effects of Adderall on the body<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8063758\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cthe primary pharmacologic effect of both amphetamine and methylphenidate is to increase central dopamine and norepinephrine activity, which impacts executive and attentional function.\u201d The impacts Adderall has on your nervous system and your body when a dose is active in your system are known as short-term effects, and they include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improved energy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enhanced focus<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Better impulse control<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased heart rate and blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constipation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAdderall [narrows your] focus, so you are more likely to keep doing whatever you are doing,\u201d Dr. Dimitriu says. \u201cThis can be good when the task ahead is clear.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since Adderall affects people differently, the effects can sometimes be challenging for people with ADHD. Dr. Dimitriu explains that singular concentration \u201ccan also lead to \u2018railroading,\u2019 or getting stuck on a wrong path, solution, or creative direction without seeing alternatives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall passes through your system<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you\u2019re likely to see these effects quickly wear off. You may start noticing an inability to focus or concentrate and an increase in impulsivity or irritability while suddenly feeling hungry, less motivated, or even sluggish.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"long-term-effects-of-adderall-on-the-body\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-term effects of Adderall on the body<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regularly taking Adderall is not a cure for ADHD. It won\u2019t have any long-lasting effects on your cognition; its cognitive benefits (like improved focus and better impulse control) will wear off as the medication does. The long-term effects of taking Adderall over an extended period are primarily physical, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytoolboxgenomics.com\/about-us\/erika-gray\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erika Gray<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., chief medical officer and co-founder of Toolbox Genomics. They include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nervousness or restlessness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty sleeping<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea or vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypertension, or high blood pressure\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight loss due to loss of appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tolerance of the medication<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall addiction<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of these effects are usually seen with Adderall abuse; this is when it is taken recreationally or without the supervision of a healthcare provider, especially at too-high doses. Taking unknown or high doses can be dangerous, says Dr. Dimitriu. It can lead to serious side effects like agitation, impaired focus, anxiety, panic attacks, or even psychosis (in extreme cases).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2798903\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High doses of Adderall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may cause cardiovascular issues like a heart attack. However, there\u2019s still a lot that experts don\u2019t know about the relationship between Adderall and heart problems since much of the evidence relates to drug abuse rather than the proper use of prescription stimulants. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acc.org\/latest-in-cardiology\/articles\/2015\/04\/28\/10\/06\/the-safety-of-stimulant-medication-use-in-cardiovascular-and-arrhythmia-patients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risks also seem to be higher for people with existing heart conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like arrhythmias, which is noted in the medication\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">black box warning<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the most part, Adderall can be safely used to minimize ADHD symptoms in patients who have no contraindications. It\u2019s a Schedule II controlled substance, so it can lead to a substance use disorder if it\u2019s misused, but that\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/childmind.org\/article\/adhd-meds-lead-addiction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rarely seen in people using therapeutic doses of the drug for ADHD as prescribed by a provider<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In fact, correctly medicating with Adderall may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.additudemag.com\/adhd-stimulant-medication-addiction-side-effects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decrease the likelihood of substance abuse later in life<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since there is less need to self-medicate with illegal substances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While you can build up a tolerance to Adderall, there\u2019s not much consistency in the studies looking at tolerance rates, notes Dr. Dimitriu. He adds that the lower the dose, the more likely you\u2019ll have positive Adderall side effects rather than negative ones. The prescribing information for amphetamines says that they should be prescribed at the lowest effective dose.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-does-adderall-stay-in-the-body\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does Adderall stay in the body?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Gray, Adderall has a half-life of 12 hours (which means half of the initial dose you took will still be in your system after 12 hours), and after about 60 hours, it will have fully \u201cwashed out\u201d or cleared from your system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe half-life of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall XR<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the same as the immediate release capsules,\u201d Dr. Gray says. \u201cThe way the XR capsules are designed, they release the medication in a two-step process, which mimics twice-a-day dosing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, Dr. Gray says certain circumstances can change how long the drug lasts in your body. The liver and kidneys break down Adderall, so anyone with liver or kidney dysfunction may have a longer half-life. Additionally, as you get older and if you take higher doses, your body can take longer to metabolize the medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another (unexpected) factor that can affect how quickly Adderall leaves your body is the pH level of your urine. High-alkaline urine decreases how much Adderall is excreted from your system, while urine high in acidity increases excretion, according to Dr. Gray.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-avoid-adderall-withdrawal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to avoid Adderall withdrawal<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you plan to discontinue Adderall entirely, you need to work with your practitioner to slowly taper your dose. Because Adderall blocks dopamine transport in the brain (which leads to increased dopamine levels), stopping the medication all at once may make your brain feel like it needs more dopamine than usual, Dr. Gray explains. This can cause unpleasant withdrawal symptoms such as mood changes, problems with concentration and motivation, irritability, and trouble sleeping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dopamine levels will eventually normalize, but it takes time. \u201cSome people feel better in one to two weeks, while others may struggle for several months,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it\u2019s also worth noting that you don\u2019t have to stop taking Adderall at any particular point\u2014there\u2019s no age when you must stop using it. Some young children and adolescents can discontinue it as they age, but many adults <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/pubs\/afp\/issues\/2000\/1101\/p2091.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">require Adderall and other ADHD treatments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> throughout their lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some people, taking a break from Adderall (i.e., planning to skip or lower a dose over the weekend) is a happy medium versus stopping it entirely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOccasional breaks or days of lower dosage are generally beneficial and can allow the body to re-sensitize to the effect of stimulants,\u201d Dr. Dimitriu says. However, you must weigh the pros against the cons. \u201cFor some people, the impact of being unmedicated with stimulants can be substantial and costly,\u201d he says. \u201c[You] should make this decision together [with your healthcare provider], reviewing interpersonal, career, or academic impacts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-switch-to-another-medication\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to switch to another medication<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Adderall is no longer the best stimulant medication for you, Dr. Dimitriu says you can work with your provider to switch between the two main classes of stimulant medication: an amphetamine drug, such as Adderall, or a methylphenidate drug, such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ritalin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several other prescription drugs fall into these categories, such as brand-name <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (in the amphetamine class) and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jornay<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (in the methylphenidate class). However, Dr. Dimitriu warns the doses may not be the same across these drugs, so your provider will have to work out the equivalent dose. Your healthcare provider should also advise you on whether or not you need to taper or discontinue your initial drug before starting your new drug. This will depend on the dose you have previously taken and the new dose being prescribed to you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One other easy thing you can do to optimize the effect of any stimulant drug is to prioritize sleep. \u201cSleep is essential to making ADHD symptoms and medications work,\u201d Dr. Dimitriu says. \u201cI have seen numerous patients report diminished or no effect from stimulants [when they are] consistently sleeping less than six to seven hours per night.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Dimitriu recommends getting extra sleep before any dose increases to prevent sleep from interfering with your medication changes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><svg style=\"display:none\">\n  <g id=\"facebook\">\n
