Extra blood is made and hormones rise and fall suddenly, leaving you tired, nauseous, irritable, and\u2014yes\u2014hot and sweaty, even in the middle of the night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Night sweats<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (nocturnal hyperhidrosis) are a common occurrence for most adults: According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdmercy.com\/find-a-doctor\/teresa-hoffman-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teresa Hoffman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, an OB-GYN at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, your body temperature peaks around midnight and then drops to its lowest around 6 a.m.; when this drop happens dramatically (like going from 98.9 degrees Fahrenheit to 97.8 quickly), you can break into a sweat as your body tries to regulate your temperature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When there are hormone fluctuations and a few other factors, it\u2019s even more likely that pregnant women will experience night sweats. Here\u2019s why they happen, how to prevent them, and when they are a sign you need an evaluation with your healthcare provider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-causes-night-sweats-during-pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes night sweats during pregnancy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to normal nighttime thermoregulation, some pregnancy-specific issues cause night sweats, including hormones and increased blood volume. These changes are normal, so sweating more and having hot flashes during pregnancy and after birth is typical as well, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hpdrx.com\/pages\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monte Swarup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, an Arizona-based OB-GYN and founder of HPD Rx. Here are seven common causes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"changing-hormones\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changing hormones<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women are susceptible to night sweats and hot flashes during hormonal fluctuations that occur during pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4167790\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2013 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 35% of women reported night sweats during pregnancy due partly to estrogen and progesterone hormonal shifts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"increased-blood-flow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased blood flow<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the first trimester, your blood vessels begin to widen to allow for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/full\/10.1161\/CIRCULATIONAHA.114.009029\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more blood flow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: initially, this helps with the development of the placenta, and later all the extra blood plasma (almost 50% more than usual) keeps the mother\u2019s organs well-supplied with blood as the mother\u2019s blood supports the circulation of two humans. This vascular dilation means there\u2019s more blood closer to the skin surface, making it easier to experience sudden flushes of heat.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"increased-metabolism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased metabolism<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of working harder, your body is also more metabolic during pregnancy, says Dr. Hoffman, and it burns calories at a higher rate, which creates more heat. Even when lying in bed trying to sleep, your body is working hard, so it\u2019s no surprise you feel warmer at night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"infection-or-illness\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infection or illness<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a fever, sweating is the body\u2019s way of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/share.upmc.com\/2022\/10\/cold-sweats-cold-and-flu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trying to prevent overheating<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Since you\u2019re unfortunately not immune to illness during pregnancy, it\u2019s possible that your sweating is due to an illness- or infection-based fever. In fact, pregnancy is an immunocompromising condition.\u00a0 This means that pregnant women are more at risk than nonpregnant women for infections during pregnancy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Hoffman says our own impressions of our body temperature based on how hot or cold we feel are pretty unreliable, so <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if you think you have a fever<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, take your temperature with a thermometer. Anything at or over 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit is a fever, so contact your healthcare provider to discuss any other symptoms and next steps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"eating-carbs-before-bed\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating carbs before bed<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you eat a high-carb meal (like those late-night pancakes you were craving), your body produces a lot of insulin, says Dr. Hoffman, which causes a quick drop in blood glucose. This can induce sweating soon after you go to bed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"low-blood-sugar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low blood sugar<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sweating because of low blood glucose can also be a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sph.washington.edu\/news-events\/news\/night-sweats-and-hot-flashes-tied-diabetes-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sign of diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so if you feel like your blood sugar is dropping overnight when you aren\u2019t carb-loading before bed, discuss your concerns with your provider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But don\u2019t worry too much about night sweats being a sign of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gestational diabetes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Dr. Swarup says gestational diabetes is usually asymptomatic, so the best thing to do is be tested for it during pregnancy at the recommended time (between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy). Your healthcare provider may add a hemoglobin A1c test to your initial obstetrical lab work in order to diagnose pre-existing Type 2 diabetes.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><b>RELATED: <\/b><b>What are normal blood sugar levels?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"thyroid-problems\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thyroid problems\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hyperthyroidism<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or an overactive thyroid can cause excessive sweating as well. But Dr. Hoffman says several other clear side effects and symptoms usually occur first, like rapid breathing, increased heart rate, and diarrhea. Sweating is more of a second-tier symptom, so it likely wouldn\u2019t be the thing to tip you off to a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thyroid imbalance during pregnancy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-are-night-sweats-common-during-pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When are night sweats common during pregnancy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Night sweats can occur at any point during your pregnancy since hormones begin fluctuating and your blood volume starts to increase as soon as you become pregnant. They\u2019re just as common in early pregnancy as in the second or third trimesters. But because your blood volume tends to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4928162\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peak at around 34 weeks gestation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and your resting metabolic rate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21124024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rises in the third trimester<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you may be particularly prone to night sweats toward the end of your pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, if hormone levels, blood volume, or metabolic rate are to blame for your night sweats, they probably won\u2019t go away before the end of your pregnancy. And the unfortunate news is that you may be even <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prone to night sweats in the postpartum period if you breastfeed your baby, says Dr. Hoffman, because your prolactin levels elevate and your estrogen levels drop (low estrogen is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/symptoms\/24631-postpartum-night-sweats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common cause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of night sweats, though experts don\u2019t quite know why).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-get-relief\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to get relief<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a biological process like pregnancy hormones or increased metabolism is the cause of your night sweats, there\u2019s not much you can do to get rid of them. But there are some ways you can help your body maintain a more consistent temperature throughout the night, as well as some lifestyle changes to make up for the things you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">control. Here are 6 tips to try.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stop drinking liquids before bedtime<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Dr. Hoffman says constantly waking up to use the bathroom during the night can disrupt your sleep enough to cause more episodes of night sweats; by limiting fluids after 7 p.m., you should wake up less. Be sure to increase fluids in the morning to help you stay hydrated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Limit carbohydrates before bedtime<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Carb-heavy snacks or meals can cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/diabetes\/expert-answers\/reactive-hypoglycemia\/faq-20057778\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sudden drops in blood glucose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can cause sweating. If you\u2019re hungry before bed, stick to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/pregnancy-week-by-week\/in-depth\/pregnancy-nutrition\/art-20045082\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnancy-safe proteins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like a serving of cottage cheese or yogurt, some nuts or nut butter, or a hard-boiled egg\u2014all of which can satisfy your hunger without spiking your blood sugar too much.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Take acetaminophen and Benadryl<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If your night sweats keep you up a lot at night and make it hard to sleep, Dr. Hoffman says you can take a dose of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> combined with a dose of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Doing this will lower your body temperature as you fall asleep and help you stay asleep.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Invest in cool bedding<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Dr. Hoffman says moisture-wicking pajamas or cotton sheets, or bed sheets and pillows designed to provide a cooling effect, can make a big difference in your nighttime comfort level.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Don\u2019t pile on the blankets<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you\u2019re pregnant during the winter, it might be tempting to bundle up before bed, but as your body temperature rises at night, you\u2019ll probably end up too hot. Opt for lightweight bedding and turn up the thermostat in your room just a bit more than usual in the colder months, if needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Increase the airflow in your room<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A ceiling fan or oscillating floor fan can keep cool, fresh air moving through your space during the warmer months. Installing an air conditioner, even just in your bedroom, can also help.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 id=\"when-should-i-be-concerned-about-pregnancy-night-sweats\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When should I be concerned about pregnancy night sweats?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the most part, having night sweats or hot flashes during pregnancy is typical and not a sign of a more serious health condition. Even when excessive sweating can be a warning sign\u2014like in the case of thyroid problems\u2014it\u2019s usually precipitated by other symptoms first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only time night sweats indicate a problem is when they\u2019re associated with fever due to illness or infection. Fever in pregnancy warrants a call to your healthcare provider; while you can manage most low-grade temperatures at home with acetaminophen, rest, and fluids, your healthcare provider will ask you about other symptoms that signal illness or infection, such as cough, back pain, or burning with urination, advises Dr. Hoffman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s more likely, though, that your night sweats are just one more thing to endure during pregnancy and not a cause for concern. Dress yourself and your bed in light, breathable fabrics like cotton, choose your bedtime snacks and drinks wisely, and circulate the air in the bedroom to reduce night sweats\u2014and remember what helps and what doesn\u2019t because if you breastfeed, you might need those tips and tricks again for those postpartum night sweats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><svg style=\"display:none\">\n  <g
