However, Mounjaro can aid in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2206038\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reducing weight up to 20<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">%,\u201d she says. \u201cIf blood sugars are not well managed on Ozempic or if weight loss has plateaued and an individual would benefit from reducing their weight and body fat percentage further, Mounjaro is an excellent medication to consider.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"dosage-and-frequency\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dosage and frequency<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic dose<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ranges from 0.25 mg \u2013 2 mg injected once weekly, whereas<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro dose<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ranges from 2.5 mg-15 mg injected once weekly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individuals switching from Ozempic to Mounjaro are unlikely to experience any benefits related to dosage since both drugs require weekly injections.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"common-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common side effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRegardless of which medication you are taking, the side effects are the same,\u201d says Kim Matta, PA-C, a physician assistant at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lifesculptmd.com\/about\/our-team\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LifeSculpt by ChristiMD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Houston, Texas. Like all medications, Ozempic and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also present a risk of allergic reactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Sawhney says Mounjaro is more likely than Ozempic to cause side effects, but anecdotally, Matta says many of her patients have reported fewer side effects from tirzepatide. Clinical trial data on<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=adec4fd2-6858-4c99-91d4-531f5f2a2d79\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain occurred in 32.7% receiving Ozempic 0.5 mg and 36.4% receiving Ozempic 1 mg.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In contrast, clinical trials of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=d2d7da5d-ad07-4228-955f-cf7e355c8cc0\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastrointestinal side effects occurred in 37.1% receiving Mounjaro 5 mg, 39.6% receiving Mounjaro 10 mg, and 43.6% receiving Mounjaro 15 mg. With both Ozempic and Mounjaro, the increase in gastrointestinal side effects occurred with dose increases and often decreased over time.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"cost\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cost<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The list prices of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic vs. Mounjaro<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are similar. However, insurance coverage and copays vary by plan. Some people might save money by switching medications if their insurance plan covers one but not the other. According to Dr. Singh, when comparing doses, Ozempic\u2019s starting dose of 0.25 mg is considered equivalent to Mounjaro\u2019s starting dose of 2.5 mg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When switching medications, Dr. Sawhney recommends starting Mounjaro at the lowest dose, then increasing it every two to four weeks until the dose matches the equivalent of the patient\u2019s previous Ozempic dose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUltimately, the goal is to find a dose that works well for each individual versus continuing to increase the dose to the maximum level,\u201d she says. \u201cWork closely with a clinician to find the right dosage based on personal blood sugar goals, weight loss goals, tolerability, and the presence of severe side effects.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"side-effects-from-stopping-ozempic-and-starting-mounjaro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects from stopping Ozempic and starting Mounjaro<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no side effects specifically related to discontinuing Ozempic or starting Mounjaro, and these medications have the same potential side effects. However, adding a second active ingredient in Mounjaro might increase the incidence or severity of side effects. Dr. Singh says that because Mounjaro is more potent, some patients also experience low blood sugar on Mounjaro. Taking Mounjaro and Ozempic together is akin to double-dosing (or overdoing) on one of these medications.
