The standard, immediate-release<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is usually taken two or three times per day, while extended-release Adderall XR is taken once daily. Both contain a mixture of two <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">central nervous system (CNS) stimulants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014amphetamines and dextroamphetamine\u2014which increase levels of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine in the brain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like other ADHD medications, Adderall is not without side effects. If you or someone in your care experience sleep problems on Adderall, you\u2019re not alone. There have been many reports of Adderall impacting sleep wellness. Below, two sleep medicine physicians unpack how and why <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affects sleep\u2014and what to do about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-adderall-affect-sleep\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Adderall affect sleep?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep disturbances are commonly reported Adderall side effects. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=35744538-1704-4ee0-954d-52710cf3456d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trials of Adderall XR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, insomnia was reported in 17% of children (ages 6\u201312), 12% of adolescents (ages 13\u201317), and 27% of adults.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insomnia, which the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/000800.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institutes of Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NIH) defines as trouble falling or staying asleep, is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3441938\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common sleep-related adverse effect associated with prescription stimulants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as Adderall. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23509113\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delayed sleep phase syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (DSPS) has also been reported with stimulant medications. An example of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stanfordhealthcare.org\/medical-conditions\/sleep\/delayed-sleep-phase-syndrome.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DSPS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is when a person\u2019s sleep is delayed by two hours or more beyond what is considered a conventional bedtime, making it difficult to wake up at the desired time. Essentially, it is a disrupted circadian rhythm (the sleep-wake cycle) that can cause daytime sleepiness and a sub-optimal sleep schedule.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also important to note that some Adderall users\u2019 sleep problems might be caused by the reason they\u2019re taking the drug in the first place: ADHD. People with ADHD have an increased risk of developing sleep disorders. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37657817\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">population-based study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Sweden found that 7.5% of people with ADHD also had a sleep disorder, and another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8187558\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study of 252 adults with ADHD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 44.4% of them had insomnia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"adderall-sleep-problems-why-they-occur\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall sleep problems: Why they occur<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a powerful stimulant that can raise blood pressure, heart rate, and energy levels,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepdocla.com\/about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex Hakim<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a Los Angeles-based sleep physician quadruple board-certified in sleep, critical care, and internal and pulmonary medicines. All of these factors are additive and increase wakefulness. That\u2019s bad news if Adderall is still active in your body when it\u2019s time to go to sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another reason for Adderall sleep problems is that it tends to stay in the body for a long time after it\u2019s ingested. Adderall has a half-life of 10\u201314 hours, according to Alex Dimitriu, MD, a double board-certified physician in psychiatry and sleep medicine and founder of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.siliconpsych.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Menlo Park Psychiatry &amp; Sleep Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That means it takes 10\u201314 hours for the body to eliminate half of the medication. \u201cBecause of the longer half-life, Adderall has a greater chance of causing insomnia and reducing deep sleep as well as REM (dream sleep) in the morning,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><b>How long does Adderall stay in your system?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUltimately, Adderall\u2019s stimulating effects can make it hard for a person to relax enough to fall and stay asleep\u2014especially if not much time has passed since taking Adderall or if the dose is too high,\u201d Dr. Harkim says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-to-do-about-sleep-problems-and-other-adderall-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to do about sleep problems and other Adderall side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no denying that people on Adderall have a higher-than-average risk of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleep problems<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The good news is that there are ways to help prevent insomnia and other Adderall side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"take-adderall-first-thing-in-the-morning\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take Adderall first thing in the morning<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to prevent sleep problems while taking Adderall is to take it as early in the day as possible. If your work schedule prevents you from sleeping at night, you can take it as far in advance of your anticipated sleep window as possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe goal is to limit the effects of the drug to the hours where it is needed most and provide an adequate time buffer for the start of anticipated sleep,\u201d Dr. Hakim says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ask-about-decreasing-your-dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask about decreasing your dosage<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall dosage varies according to each person\u2019s needs. Dr. Hakim also suggests working with your healthcare provider to determine your \u201clowest effective dose\u201d can mitigate sleep problems and other Adderall side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Standard Adderall dosage for adults and children ages 6 and older is 5\u201340 mg once per day or divided into 2\u20133 daily doses every 4\u20136 hours. Adderall XR is taken just once per day. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall XR dosage<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is 20\u201360 mg for adults, 10\u201340 mg for adolescents 13\u201317 years old, and 5\u201330 mg for children 6\u201312 years old.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are experiencing trouble sleeping on Adderall and are not at the lowest recommended dosage for your age group, talk to your healthcare provider about the benefits versus risks of decreasing your dosage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"avoid-other-stimulants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid other stimulants\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stimulants such as caffeine and nasal decongestants may make Adderall side effects like insomnia worse. It\u2019s a good idea to limit or avoid coffee, tea, energy drinks, caffeinated soda, and other stimulants while on Adderall.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ask-your-prescriber-about-switching-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask your prescriber about switching medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall is not the only <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD treatment<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> available. Dr. Dimitriu says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ritalin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">methylphenidate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is \u201csomewhat gentler\u201d than Adderall, which might mean fewer side effects for people who are sensitive to stimulants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are having trouble sleeping while taking Adderall, tell your healthcare provider. They can determine whether to switch you to a lower dose or try a different prescription medication for ADHD or narcolepsy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"practice-good-sleep-habits\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practice good sleep habits<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best things you can do to mitigate the risks of Adderall affecting your sleep is to develop good sleep hygiene.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Dimitriu stresses the importance of getting sufficient sleep\u2014at least seven hours a night\u2014and avoiding the use of stimulants. He says that, without sufficient sleep, \u201cthe benefit of the stimulant soon gets lost or diminished, and an unhealthy pattern of poor sleep and need for more stimulants can emerge.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Hakim agrees and emphasizes that, with a thoughtful sleep strategy, it\u2019s possible to avoid relying on sedatives and sleep aids for better sleep. \u201cWhen Adderall is used recklessly, the need for powerful drugs for insomnia can develop, leading to a potentially escalating cycle of polypharmacy and dependence,\u201d he
