Here, we share some of the top doctor-recommended ways to stop throwing up, including popular home remedies and over-the-counter (OTC) medicine to stop vomiting.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/vomiting-101-why-you-throw-up-and-the-best-way-to-recover\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">times when you should let your body vomit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> instead of interfering. But if the vomiting persists, there are certain treatments and remedies that may provide urgent nausea and vomiting relief for some of the most common causes. Here are a few of the most effective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-let-your-stomach-rest\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Let your stomach rest<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who\u2019ve just thrown up might not even want to look at any food or drinks, and that\u2019s a good thing. \u201cIf you swallow something, immediately your body is going to think it is the start of food and rev up the digestive system as it was designed,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ernie-vesta-md-367b227\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ernie Vesta, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, medical director of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.curally.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curally<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt generally takes about four hours for the stomach to totally empty after a meal. So, let the stomach empty for about four hours after your last vomit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/patientinstructions\/000122.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MedlinePlus also recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sitting\u2014but not lying down\u2014since moving around might also increase the discomfort. This will help settle the stomach before eating, drinking, or taking medications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-drink-clear-liquids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Do deep breathing exercises<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDeep breathing can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which may help calm the body\u2019s stress response that often accompanies nausea,\u201d says Dr. Rizwan Bashir, MD, a neurologist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AICA Orthopedics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1744388119309557\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a recent study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, breathing exercises reduced chemotherapy-induced nausea, vomiting, and retching in cancer patients. Taking a second to breathe deeply and evenly in moments of intense nausea may help stave off vomiting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-grab-some-ginger\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Grab some ginger<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People around the world have used ginger for digestive issues for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/herb\/ginger\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thousands of years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because it can improve the gastrointestinal tract\u2019s efficiency, helping to move food through the system. Even today, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6341159\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies consistently show<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that ginger has a positive effect on vomiting and nausea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A knob of raw ginger is pretty unappetizing on its own, but homemade ginger tea\u2014adding grated ginger to boiling water\u2014can make it more appealing. It\u2019s also available in supplement form, and ginger ale may work well in a pinch too. But while ginger might soothe the stomach, \u201cif you haven\u2019t cleared whatever was bothering you in the first place, no amount of home remedy will solve the problem,\u201d Dr. Vesta says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-use-peppermint-oil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Use peppermint oil<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freshening breath is far from peppermint\u2019s only benefit. It\u2019s long been a home remedy for all kinds of gut issues, including vomiting. As a natural relaxant, it may help the muscles around the stomach stop contracting. In fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0965229920318549\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a study from 2021<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> concluded that \u201cpeppermint oil significantly reduced the frequency of nausea, vomiting, and retching\u201d in chemotherapy patients who placed a drop of the oil between their upper lip and their nose three times a day for five days after chemotherapy. Peppermint tea is a good option, but peppermint <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/innovareacademics.in\/journal\/ajpcr\/Vol2Issue2\/187.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aromatherapy can work too<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"9-reach-for-lemons\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. Reach for lemons<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This citrus powerhouse has a lot of benefits, and that includes vomiting prevention. However, it\u2019s not always their nutritional properties that do the trick. Rather, it\u2019s their aroma. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24829772\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found lemon aromas were effective for reducing vomiting in pregnant women with morning sickness, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmccomplementmedtherapies.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12906-023-04047-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">another study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that it may also work for vomiting and nausea in postoperative patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lemon water<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may also help settle an upset stomach since it might aid digestion. Just be careful\u2014because citrus is highly acidic, too much of it may cause additional abdominal pain or acid reflux.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"10-try-acupressure\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10. Try acupressure<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAcupressure, particularly on the P6 or Nei Guan point on the wrist, is a traditional remedy that may help in reducing nausea,\u201d Dr. Bashir explains. This is a traditional Chinese therapy that uses hands and fingers to apply pressure on specific parts of the body. The Pericardium 6 (or P6) point is located between the two tendons on the underside of the wrist. Pressing on it may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/002117.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">change the pain messages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that particular nerves send to the brain, although it\u2019s not effective for everyone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, by pressing and massaging this point, people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32018274\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnancy-induced vomiting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2451865423001849\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">myocardial infarctions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been able to find some relief, studies show.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-stop-yourself-from-throwing-up-prevention-is-key\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to stop yourself from throwing up: Prevention is key<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If vomiting is a consistent issue, or for people who\u2019d rather just take proactive measures to avoid it, certain lifestyle changes can help prevent or reduce the risk. They include:<\/span><b\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Prioritize good hygiene. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt sounds gross, but most GI tract pathogens are fecal-oral transmitted,\u201d Dr. Vesta says. \u201cSo, hygiene is really important, specifically hand washing. Water is the universal solvent.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Avoid overeating. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating too much can put pressure on the stomach. Eating small meals throughout the day can reduce gastric stress\u2014just don\u2019t skip meals.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Eat slowly. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like overeating, eating quickly can make the stomach work harder, and it\u2019s best not to overburden it.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Avoid trigger foods. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For someone who gets nauseous after eating spicy foods, a plate of Buffalo wings might not be the best choice. Other common triggers include fried, fatty, processed, or strong-smelling foods.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Stay hydrated. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting may cause dehydration, but the opposite is also possible. Either way, it\u2019s important to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drink enough water<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> throughout the day.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-see-a-doctor-for-vomiting\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to see a doctor for vomiting<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting doesn\u2019t always warrant a rush to the ER. In fact, some people feel a lot better after they vomit. Still, it\u2019s important to know the warning signs for a condition that requires immediate help.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical treatment may be necessary if the vomiting lasts for longer than 48 hours for adults. \u201cSeek medical help if vomiting is persistent, severe, accompanied by symptoms like a headache, fever, stiff neck, or if there are signs of dehydration,\u201d Dr. Bashir says. \u201cAdditionally, vomiting after a head injury or with neurological symptoms like altered consciousness or severe headache warrants prompt medical evaluation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since vomiting depletes bodily fluids, any adult or child experiencing signs of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">severe dehydration<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like dark-colored urine, difficulty urinating, lightheadedness, dry mouth, or confusion, should seek medical attention. Most people wrongly assume they\u2019re not dehydrated if their mouth is not dry. That\u2019s far from reality,\u201d Dr. Vesta explains. \u201cThen, there are what\u2019s known as \u2018insensible losses,\u2019 which are fluid losses you don\u2019t know about. The higher the temperature you have, the more quickly fluid will evaporate from your body. A good way to know you\u2019re dehydrated is if you pinch your skin and it stays tented,\u201d meaning it remains elevated in the area you pinched it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consistent or recurring vomiting with no apparent underlying cause may denote an underlying condition, so it\u2019s important to see a healthcare provider to get an accurate
