You can have diverticula and never experience inflammation or infection, in fact, most people with diverticulosis will not experience problems. If you do, however, it\u2019s called diverticulitis\u2014and these acute attacks, or flare-ups, are not only painful but can be dangerous if left untreated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Figuring out what causes diverticulitis for you, personally, is the most important thing you can do to manage your condition and avoid flare-ups\u2026but you might not be aware yet of what your triggers are. Here are the foods generally considered safe and unsafe to eat\u2014as well as how else you can manage your diverticulitis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to manage diverticulitis with diet<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While newly-diagnosed people often feel overwhelmed by the limitations of a diverticulitis diet, the good news is that you don\u2019t need to be overly restrictive with what you eat or follow a special diet. There are a few\u00a0 \u201cgolden rules\u201d when it comes to choosing safe foods for diverticulitis that can make it easy to keep your stomach happy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Know your triggers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each person with diverticulitis needs to base their diet around their own particular circumstances, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdmercy.com\/centers-of-excellence\/additional-centers\/primary-care-physicians\/find-a-primary-care-doctor\/primary-care-doctors\/kathryn-boling-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kathryn A. Boling, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, primary care provider with Mercy Personal Physicians at Lutherville in Maryland. What bothers you might not bother someone else with diverticulitis; on the flip side, you might be able to eat foods that many other people can\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAcross populations, studies say you don\u2019t have to worry about what you eat [normally], but patients often say to me, \u2018I know we can eat whatever we want, but I\u2019ve noticed things like nuts or popcorn cause problems for me,\u2019\u201d Dr. Boling says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FYI, Dr. Boling suffers from diverticulitis herself\u2026and her biggest trigger is blackberries. If something triggers your symptoms, avoid eating it even if it doesn\u2019t go against \u201cthe rules.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take it slow<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve recently had a diverticulitis attack and are getting back to eating normally again, it\u2019s important to ease into your usual diet. This is especially important if you don\u2019t know what caused your flare-up; otherwise, you run the risk of eating the exact thing that triggered your symptoms in the first place. You may then have to start all over again. It is also recommended to initially eat a low fiber diet during and immediately after a bout of diverticulitis. Examples of low-fiber foods include white bread, white rice, and white potatoes. Many people are able to eat these foods without issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Possibly unsafe foods to eat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may be able to eat these foods, eat them carefully or infrequently, or eat them in small amounts\u2014or they may pose too much of a trigger for your colon. If that\u2019s the case, you\u2019re in good company; these are the foods that could potentially cause a diverticulitis flare-up.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hard-to-chew foods:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hard foods that are difficult to break down are more likely to get trapped in the pockets of your colon.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Medium-sized seeds or nuts:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sunflower seeds, for example, may be difficult on your digestion; strawberries seeds usually aren\u2019t (though they could still bother you!).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Popcorn and corn on the cob: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because you tend to eat these foods quickly\u2014rather than taking time to fully chew them\u2014they are more likely to cause issues.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Red meat:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some studies suggest red meat can contribute to diverticulitis flares; one from 2018, published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gut<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, showed an increase in attacks for men who<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5533623\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consumed more red meat than other types of protein<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like poultry and fish.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>High-FODMAP foods:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some experts think<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5095569\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">following a low FODMAP diet can reduce the amount of pressure in the colon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and limit the number of acute attacks a person with diverticulitis might have.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are alcohol and coffee bad for diverticulitis?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not necessarily, though you definitely want to avoid alcohol and caffeine if you\u2019re experiencing a diverticulitis attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCoffee is a bowel stimulant, so if you\u2019re having an attack you might want to stay away and rest your bowel,\u201d says Dr. Boling, \u201cbut in the long run, people who have recovered can drink it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same goes for alcohol, though Dr. Boling does warn that alcohol is hard on your stomach in general\u2014and symptoms of other health conditions, like<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pancreatitis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can be similar to symptoms of a diverticulitis flare (making it hard to know if you\u2019re treating your symptoms appropriately).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diet for diverticulitis flare-ups<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re experiencing an acute diverticulitis attack and want to rest your bowel so it can recover faster, you might want to go on a clear liquid diet for one to two days, advises Dr. Boling. This means you can consume clear liquids of all kinds, including chicken broth, water or ice chips, Gatorade, no-pulp juice, herbal tea, or even Jell-O (since it\u2019s digested as a liquid).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, if you can see through it, you can eat or drink it, says Dr. Boling\u2014and this type of short-term diet can be used to recover from an acute attack, to preempt an oncoming attack (when you start to feel symptoms), and even alongside antibiotics, should your healthcare provider prescribe them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of a diverticulitis flare-up include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain, often on your lower left side<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea and vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cramping and bloating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea or constipation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Once the flare is under control, you can return to normal eating habits.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other ways to keep diverticulitis under control<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve done everything you can to identify your triggers and keep your symptoms under control, but are still living with flare-ups, you may be able to adopt a few lifestyle changes to control your diverticulitis. These can be done in addition to modifying your diet for diverticulitis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking probiotics<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts are still researching the effect of probiotics (or \u201cgood bacteria\u201d) on diverticulitis, but what they\u2019ve seen so far suggests it can be helpful for many patients. A<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europeanreview.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/9126-9133.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Review for Medical and Pharmacological Sciences<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that, when used with antibiotics, probiotics may help reduce the amount of abdominal pain during acute attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another review of studies,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3625022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in 2013<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therapeutic Advances in Gastroenterology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is less certain that probiotics can help. However, the article does suggest that they may help, and that\u2014at the very least\u2014it doesn\u2019t hurt to try.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Probiotics coupons<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercising<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s long been known that frequent physical activity can prevent diverticulitis symptoms. An often-sourced<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3144158\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study from 2009<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, published in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Journal of Gastroenterology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, found that vigorous activity lowered the risk of diverticulitis and GI bleeding.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, that study did specify vigorous exercise, so walking may not be quite enough to reap the health benefits. Light and moderate forms of exercise didn\u2019t show the same results.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking vitamins or supplements<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fiber supplements are powerful<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for managing symptoms of diverticulitis, largely because it keeps stool moving through the colon. \u201cIf you keep stool soft, you can prevent the clogging of the diverticula,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/ashkan-farhadi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ashkan Farhadi, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a gastroenterologist at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center in California. \u201cIn general, if you can manage to avoid constipation, it may prevent flare-ups.\u201d A high-fiber diet\u2014as long as it includes high-fiber foods that don\u2019t irritate your system\u2014can also be beneficial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fiber coupons<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also suggests taking<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">magnesium<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can strengthen the intestinal muscles and keep stools soft and regular. It\u2019s been shown, says Dr. Farhadi, that foods rich in magnesium can prevent the progression of diverticulosis\u2014but be aware that some of these foods are nuts, and you may be limited in eating them if they\u2019re a trigger food for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magnesium coupons<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As far as other vitamins, some patients with diverticulitis wonder about vitamin D. Some studies have shown that<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3840074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people with higher vitamin D levels are less likely to develop diverticulitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, there\u2019s not much research here, and a<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0261561420304465\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 controlled trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looking at the link found no difference among diverticulitis hospitalizations between people who supplemented with vitamin D and those who didn\u2019t.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin D coupons<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In more moderate to severe cases, your physician may prescribe an antibiotic to clear the infection. Some patients are also prescribed these antibiotics at the start of a flare, to prevent worsening of symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether this is the right choice for you is between you and your healthcare provider. Many physicians will prescribe something like ciprofloxacin or<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amoxicillin-clavulanic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but make sure, whatever you\u2019re prescribed, that you tell your provider about other medicine you\u2019re taking so you can avoid any interactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amoxicillin-clavulanic acid coupons<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b> <\/b><b>Diverticulitis treatment and medications<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you reverse diverticulitis?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can recover fully from diverticulitis and not suffer acute attacks in the future with the right combination of diet and lifestyle choices. It may take as little as a few days or as long as a few weeks to heal and go back to \u201cnormal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the meantime, follow a clear liquid diet when needed to rest your bowel. However, he adds that providers now typically wait to discuss performing any kind of surgery until after a patient has had a minimum of three attacks. However, a single, severe bout of diverticulitis (such as with an accompanying abscess), may require surgical intervention<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to see your doctor<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re experiencing an acute attack, you can try resting your bowel with a clear liquid diet for one to two days, says Dr. Boling, but if you\u2019re still having pain after that you should call your healthcare provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t ignore your symptoms or brush them off as \u201cjust diverticulitis,\u201d she notes. You may need antibiotics, IV hydration, or even hospitalization to feel better. In worst case scenarios, diverticulitis can become fatal if left untreated (thanks to the risk of a perforated bowel and sepsis).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lea
