Trintellix was approved by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2021\/204447s021s022lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food and Drug Administration (FDA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2013 to treat adults with MDD and is in the family of antidepressants called a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/elsevier.health\/en-US\/preview\/serotonin-modulator-antidepressants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin modulator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It works in multiple ways to treat depression symptoms, including functioning as a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A common concern people have when considering taking an antidepressant is whether it will affect their sexual performance since side effects like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low libido and difficulty with arousal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are often reported with antidepressant use. While Trintellix can cause sexual side effects for some people, studies suggest its classification as a serotonin modulator makes it less likely to affect sexual performance than other similar antidepressants, such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoloft<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (sertraline) and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paxil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (paroxetine).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what to know about the potential for sexual side effects on Trintellix, including what to do if you think Trintellix is affecting your sexual performance.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-connection-between-antidepressants-and-sex-drive\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The connection between antidepressants and sex drive<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.doctoralex.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex Dimitriu, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, psychiatrist, sleep medicine specialist, and founder of Menlo Park Psychiatry &amp; Sleep Medicine, certain antidepressants\u2014particularly SSRIs, which affect your serotonin levels\u2014can cause a decrease in sex drive because they block specific receptors in the brain that contribute to sexual arousal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, increasing serotonin levels with SSRIs can lower the amount of dopamine in your brain, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/mind-and-mood\/dopamine-the-pathway-to-pleasure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the \u201cfeel-good\u201d hormone tied to desire<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cVery generally speaking, there is a balance in the brain between serotonin and dopamine, and for some people, increasing serotonin can lower dopamine,\u201d Dr. Dimitriu says. \u201cI often tell my patients that SSRIs dull the passions, bad and good.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"trintellix-sexual-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix sexual side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The manufacturer of Trintellix, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/us.trintellix.com\/treatment\/side-effects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Takeda Pharmaceuticals USA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, does report sexual side effects as a possibility when taking the drug. In its own clinical trials, Takeda found that up to 5% of people with MDD taking Trintellix reported sexual side effects after six and eight weeks of treatment. More side effects were reported in people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher doses<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and side effects were more common in females than males. These side effects included lower sex drive, difficulty becoming aroused, and delay or failure to have an orgasm or ejaculation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In studies, though, Trintellix is associated less with sexual side effects than other types of antidepressants. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.muhealth.org\/doctors\/arpit-aggarwal-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arpit Aggarwal, MD,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> University of Missouri Health Care psychiatrist<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, points to an eight-week study of participants who switched from Zoloft, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celexa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (citalopram), or Paxil to either Trintellix or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lexapro<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (escitalopram) after reporting sexual side effects. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/new-data-added-to-trintellix-vortioxetine-labeling-demonstrated-superiority-over-escitalopram-in-improving-ssri-induced-sexual-dysfunction-in-patients-with-major-depressive-disorder-300734891.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, participants who switched to Trintellix showed more improvement in sexual performance than participants who switched to Lexapro.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne possible reason for this,\u201d explains Dr. Aggarwal, \u201cis that in addition to acting as an SSRI, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/2631831820973103\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix binds to certain receptors in the brain called 5-HT1A receptors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, possibly helping mitigate the sexual dysfunction that typically happens with SSRIs.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is also true for another serotonin modulator called <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viibryd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (vilazodone): \u201cAntidepressants like vortioxetine or vilazodone have built-in mechanisms in addition to the SSRI effect, to reverse some of the unwanted side effects,\u201d Dr. Dimitriu says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-antidepressants-with-a-low-risk-of-sexual-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other antidepressants with a low risk of sexual side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are many types of antidepressants, and different types work in different ways,\u201d Dr. Dimitriu says. Some of them don\u2019t affect serotonin levels at all, making them less likely to cause sexual side effects. In addition to Trintellix and Viibryd, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellbutrin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (bupropion) and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remeron<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (mirtazapine) have been shown to be the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/depression\/expert-answers\/antidepressants\/faq-20058104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">least likely antidepressants to cause sexual side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In contrast, Dr. Dimitriu says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> antidepressants and Paxil have historically been associated with the most severe sexual side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-manage-sexual-side-effects-of-antidepressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to manage sexual side effects of antidepressants<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Dimitriu says it\u2019s important to note that while some antidepressants are known to cause a decline in libido and ability to climax, these effects are also often experienced with untreated anxiety or depression. In other words, concerns about a lower sex drive shouldn\u2019t keep you from properly treating and managing your symptoms with medication if your healthcare provider thinks it will help you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also shouldn\u2019t cause you to suddenly stop Trintellix, especially not without talking to your provider first.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStopping abruptly can result in many unwanted symptoms, including severe mood swings, depression, and irritability, which would be avoided with a more gradual discontinuation,\u201d Dr. Dimitriu says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b> <\/b><b>What happens if I suddenly stop taking Trintellix?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As far as switching to another antidepressant to avoid sexual side effects, remember that Trintellix is actually associated with fewer sexual side effects than many other antidepressants, including SSRIs, because of its unique method of action. Although you and your provider may ultimately decide to switch to a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix alternative<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like Wellbutrin or Remeron, keep in mind that there are ways to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manage the side effects of antidepressants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that don\u2019t include changing your medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Dimitriu says prioritizing healthy behavioral habits\u2014like sleeping well, exercising, eating a nutritious diet, and spending time outdoors or in social situations\u2014can help reduce antidepressant adverse side effects, and so can lowering your dose to an amount that still provides mental health benefits but doesn\u2019t affect your sex drive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There may also be other medications you can take to offset the sexual side effects of Trintellix. However, Dr. Dimitriu advises trying lifestyle and dose changes first before introducing new medications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome people benefit from the addition of medications like buspirone or Wellbutrin,\u201d he explains, \u201cand other people benefit from the use of [erectile dysfunction] medications like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:
