Some experts think this figure is low, as students aren\u2019t required to report their condition, and some are undiagnosed. This means <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/programs\/coe\/indicator\/cha\/undergrad-enrollment#:~:text=In%20fall%202021%2C%20total%20undergraduate,2020%20(15.9%20million%20students).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">millions of students<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> each year are looking for ways to manage ADHD while in college.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s good news for these young people, professors, and anyone looking for ways to support college students with ADHD: Success is possible on both an academic and a personal level. The right resources will set these students up for success.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"challenges-college-students-with-adhd-face\"><b>Challenges college students with ADHD face<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows that ADHD is often linked to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/attention-deficit-hyperactivity-disorder-adhd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impulsivity, hyperactivity, and inattention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Noise-canceling headphones can improve focus and boost productivity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students who experience impulsivity and hyperactivity may prefer a standing desk that allows for more movement while studying. A yoga ball is another way to accommodate frequent urges to move around. Typically, the DS office will ask for documentation of the student\u2019s diagnosis in addition to other forms or an intake meeting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Registering with the student DS office doesn\u2019t cost anything, and students can schedule an appointment at any time. However, it\u2019s best if new students sign up with DS right away, even if they don\u2019t believe they need support for their college courses. It\u2019s always better for students to ask for help before they reach their breaking point.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students may need to write out a list of accommodations they\u2019d like to request and explain why they need these. Students can ask for anything they feel could help them. Although the college may not approve everything, it doesn\u2019t hurt to ask. The school will send the student an email or letter outlining the accommodations it has approved.
