The drug is a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) inhibitor<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that works by blocking the receptors of CGRP, a protein involved in the development of migraine headaches, explains <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.integrativeheadacheny.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lauren R. Natbony, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified neurologist and medical director of Integrative Headache Medicine of New York. Essentially, Aimovig helps stop the chain of events that trigger <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">migraine symptoms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For people with frequent migraines, Aimovig can be a game-changer. But it\u2019s also expensive, especially for people without insurance that covers Aimovig. Fortunately, there are ways to save on Aimovig and make this prescription less cost-prohibitive.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-much-does-aimovig-cost\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much does Aimovig cost?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without insurance or any discounts, a monthly supply of one pen injector containing 1 ml of 140 mg\/ml of Aimovig has an average retail price of $1,048 as of the time this article was written. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amgensafetynetfoundation.com\/how-to-apply.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amgen Safety Net Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers free Aimovig to eligible enrollees who meet its income limits, are uninsured, or have insurance that excludes coverage for Aimovig.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To apply for Aimovig patient assistance, complete and sign the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amgensafetynetfoundation.com\/assets\/pdf\/AMGEN-SNF-Application-Prescription-Aimovig-EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">patient application<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where indicated and give it to your healthcare provider who will complete the last page and fax it to 833-959-1409. Once the application has been processed, you and your healthcare provider will be notified of an enrollment decision. Free Aimovig coupons<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has free coupons that can help reduce the cash price of an Aimovig prescription. Show your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prescription discount card<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to your pharmacist when paying for your medication to see how much you can save. Or, do some price comparing in advance by looking for an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aimovig coupon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the  drug page. There, you can compare how much your coupon will save you at different pharmacies. Although the average retail price of a 140 mg\/ml Aimovig pen is $1,048, you can pay as little as $739 with a  coupon.  prices may vary by quantity, form, and pharmacy. Aimovig Copay Card<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amgen, the manufacturer of Aimovig, offers an AImovig Copay Card, which may lower Aimovig\u2019s out-of-pocket costs to as little as $5 per month. According to the manufacturer, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aimovig.com\/paying-for-aimovig\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amgen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, patients with commercial insurance who use a copay discount card from Amgen typically pay $5\u2013$82 per injection. Eligibility criteria include having a valid Aimovig prescription and having commercial insurance or private insurance. This copay savings card does not apply to anyone with Medicare Part D, Medicaid, or other government-funded prescription drug plans. It is also not available to cash-paying patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This card has no income stipulation, but you must <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aimovigcopaycard.com\/enroll\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complete a short online form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to apply.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-compare-prices\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Compare health plan coverage<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s essential to stay informed about updates to insurance <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">formularies<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as medication coverage may change, according to Dr. Natbony. For example, a plan that did not cover Aimovig last year may cover it next year, as the list of covered drugs can change at any time. By staying up-to-date on coverage options, people can make the best possible choice of insurance plan during Open Enrollment Periods.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-ask-your-provider-for-samples\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Ask your provider for samples<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAsking healthcare providers for samples can provide short-term savings,\u201d Dr. Natbony explains. However, she says migraine medications in other drug classes may be prescribed as cost-effective <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aimovig alternatives<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Choi says alternative migraine preventive medications may include <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta-blockers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calcium channel blockers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seizure medications<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and even Botox injections. \u201cOf course, we can also use <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">triptans<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for acute attacks,\u201d Choi adds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The list prices of some of these Aimovig alternatives for migraine prevention are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toprol XL<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (metoprolol) is a brand-name beta-blocker, used <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for migraine prevention, that costs about $59 for 30, 50 mg extended-release tablets before insurance or discounts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a generic calcium channel blocker, used off-label for migraine prophylaxis, that costs about $27 for 90, 80 mg tablets before insurance or discounts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topiramate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a generic anticonvulsant that costs about $107 for 60, 25 mg tablets before insurance or discounts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amitriptyline<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a generic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tricyclic antidepressant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, used off-label for migraine prevention, that costs about $26 for 30, 25 mg tablets before insurance or discounts.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other CGRP antagonists may be good alternative prescription drugs because they have mechanisms of action similar to Aimovig.
