Veterinarians could use <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">azithromycin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for any of these infections, though it\u2019s not always their first choice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Azithromycin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not kill bacteria like some antibiotics do. As a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">macrolide antibiotic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it prevents bacteria from making proteins that help bacteria grow and spread. It\u2019s a bacteriostatic drug. Another advantage of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">azithromycin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is that it collects in white blood cells, the infection-fighting cells that crowd around an infection. In a sense, the immune system delivers the drug where it\u2019s needed. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Azithromycin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merckvetmanual.com\/pharmacology\/antibacterial-agents\/macrolide-use-in-animals\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">collects in the lung tissues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making it a good choice for lung infections.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"babesiosis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Babesiosis<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Babesiosis is a parasite infection of the blood rarely found in the United States. It most commonly occurs in the southeastern U.S. and Texas. Babesiosis is thought to be spread by ticks and dogfights.
