It has since achieved additional approvals, including the treatment of children 10 years and older with Type 2 diabetes when combined with diet and exercise. Additional approvals include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reducing the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization in adults with heart failure as well as in adults with established Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reducing the risk of cardiovascular death, hospitalization, and worsening kidney damage in adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is part of a class of drugs called sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. This type of medication is a glucose absorption inhibitor,\u201d explained dietitian and certified diabetes educator <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/realtalkrealfood.com\/info.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angela Ginn-Meadow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who take Jardiance are often on it for life. Their prescriptions need to be refilled on time to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keep their blood sugar levels in the safe zone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Fortunately, most Medicare and commercial insurance plans cover Jardiance. With Medicare coverage, the average patient can expect to pay up to $20 monthly for Jardiance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-medicare-covers-prescription-drugs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Medicare covers prescription drugs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are eligible for Medicare, you may know that different parts cover different types of healthcare.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Original Medicare Parts A and B provide health insurance for inpatient and outpatient health services respectively, among other services.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part D is a type of insurance plan that covers many some prescription drugs and is offered as an optional add-on to original Medicare.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage) is a way of receiving your Medicare benefits through an approved private insurance company instead of through Original Medicare. Most Medicare Advantage Plans include prescription drug coverage (Parts A, B, and D).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different Medicare drug plans have different drug formularies\u2014lists of medications the plan covers. All Medicare drug plans, regardless of whether part of a Medicare Advantage plan or a stand-alone Part D plan, must cover <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/drug-coverage-part-d\/what-medicare-part-d-drug-plans-cover\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at least two drugs in most prescription drug categories<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That means each Medicare drug plan covers multiple anti-diabetic drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-medicare-cover-jardiance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Medicare cover Jardiance?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part D plans may cover a variety of anti-diabetic drugs, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/publications\/11022-medicare-coverage-of-diabetes-supplies.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">usually<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> includes Jardiance, but when it does, it may require prior authorization, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/blair-gingerich-622867280\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blair Gingerich, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an ambulatory care pharmacist in northern Indiana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s why: Medicare covers <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SGLT2 inhibitors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but Jardiance is only one of several SGLT2 inhibitors. Remember, Medicare Part D plans are only required to cover two medications in each drug class, and these vary from plan to plan. Dr. Gingerich also says that not all Medicare Part D plans cover a drug\u2019s total cost.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b> <\/b><b>Does Medicaid cover Jardiance?<\/b><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-the-cost-of-jardiance-on-medicare\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the cost of Jardiance on Medicare?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 1 million Medicare Part D beneficiaries filled prescriptions for Jardiance in 2022, according to an official Jardiance fact sheet from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aspe.hhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/b579122f216f5c3eb3f7ef6c6091b5c1\/Jardiance.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Department of Health and Human Services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Most paid about $490 for Jardiance in 2022, which is about $41 per month. Part D beneficiaries who were eligible for the low-income subsidy, also called the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/medicare\/part-d-extra-help\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Extra Help program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, paid less\u2014$20 annually, or an average of $1.67 monthly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<table class=\" singlecare-table\">\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th>\n<h3 id=\"average-out-of-pocket-costs-for-jardiance-on-medicare-part-d\"><span class=\"title\">Average out-of-pocket costs for Jardiance on Medicare Part D*<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annually<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$490<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$20<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monthly<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$20<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$1.67<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* As of December 2022<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, the cost of Jardiance on Medicare depends on the specifics of your Medicare Part D plan. Factors that may influence your cost of Jardiance include whether you qualify for the Extra Help program and the coverage phase you\u2019re in. Copays will also vary by plan formulary, choice of pharmacy, and other factors.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-the-prescription-drug-law-affects-jardiance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How the prescription drug law affects Jardiance<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In January 2023, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/about-us\/prescription-drug-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new prescription drug law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> went into effect as part of the Inflation Reduction Act. The law will allow Medicare to negotiate directly with pharmaceutical companies to improve access to affordable prescription drug costs. Ten drugs were selected for the first round of negotiations, and Jardiance was one of them. That means a new, negotiated price for Jardiance will be effective in 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the first time the Medicare program has been able to negotiate with drug companies for lower prices of brand-name prescription drugs. Exactly how low the negotiation process drives costs remains to be seen, but it is being considered a significant step. And according to Medicare, negotiated prices will benefit Medicare enrollees in several ways:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>More vaccines covered \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with Medicare can now receive several vaccines\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shingles<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whooping cough<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and more\u2014at zero cost.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lower costs for insulin \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the new law, people with Medicare drug plans cannot be charged more than $35 for a one-month supply of insulin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lower out-of-pocket drug costs \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The law helps lower drug costs in several ways, including an Extra Help expansion, a Part D out-of-pocket cost cap of $2,000 starting in 2025, and lower Part B drug costs in certain situations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"jardiance-coupons-for-medicare\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance coupons for Medicare<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re wondering whether you can save on Jardiance with coupons, the good news is that you can\u2014even those with drug coverage through Medicare Part D. However, you might not be able to double dip by using both. It\u2019s a good idea to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ask a pharmacist<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to compare what Jardiance would cost with a coupon versus with Medicare to ensure you save as much as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prescription discount card<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you can access Jardiance coupons to use at your preferred pharmacy. At the time this article was written, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was available for $526.69 for 30, 25 mg tablets. That\u2019s about $300 less than the average retail cost.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-ways-to-save-on-jardiance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other ways to save on Jardiance<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance is a high-cost drug. But it\u2019s also necessary for many patients with Type 2 diabetes. Fortunately, there are ways to save.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned previously, the Medicare Extra Help program<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a federal subsidy that helps Medicare Part D beneficiaries afford their medications. There are eligibility criteria, however. To be considered, a person must live in the United States and be enrolled in or willing to enroll in Medicare Part D. Then, the applicant must meet specific resource and income limits, which are detailed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/basics\/costs\/help\/drug-costs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"patient-assistance-programs-for-jardiance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patient assistance programs for Jardiance<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boehringer Ingelheim, the company that makes Jardiance, has a patient assistance program called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.boehringer-ingelheim.com\/us\/our-responsibility\/patient-assistance-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BI Cares<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The program provides Boehringer Ingelheim drugs at no cost to patients in the United States or one of its territories who meet its eligibility requirements. Medicare beneficiaries may be eligible if their Part D plan doesn\u2019t provide enough coverage to make Jardiance affordable.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"jardiance-alternatives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance alternatives<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, per Ginn-Meadow and Dr. Gingerich, there is no generic version of Jardiance. However, there are other SGLT2 inhibitors\u2014other drugs that have similar chemical structures and ways of acting in the body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other SGLT2s include:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b> <\/b><b>Jardiance alternatives: What can I take instead of Jardiance?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is a possibility that one SGLT2 may be preferred over the other on an individual\u2019s insurance plan,\u201d Dr. Gingerich said. \u201cHowever, there is research that states that some SGLT2 inhibitors are better than others at preventing heart disease or reducing kidney disease.\u201d In other words, not all SGLT2s are appropriate for someone prescribed Jardiance for cardiovascular disease or chronic kidney disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Jardiance is prescribed for blood sugar control, Ginn-Meadow points out that there is also a \u201ccombination pill\u201d that includes empagliflozin, the active ingredient in Jardiance, and metformin. This medication, called <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Synjardy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, may be an alternative to Jardiance for some patients. Some patients may be given two separate prescriptions, one for Jardiance and a separate one for metformin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong> Jardiance vs. Metformin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, only a healthcare provider who understands a patient\u2019s medical history and condition can choose which prescription drug is best for that
