Often, someone might be interested in using Wellbutrin rather than a different antidepressant because of the desire to avoid certain antidepressant side effects. Cost may also be a concern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAntidepressants like Wellbutrin can be an appropriate choice for patients, especially those patients that are concerned about weight gain or sexual side effects and would prefer a generic medication due to cost or limitations on coverage for their insurance,\u201d Matthews says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because this combination is not well-studied at this time, psychiatric healthcare providers will usually only recommend these two medications together on an individual basis after a thorough assessment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is important to understand the patient\u2019s unique medical and psychiatric needs and other medications they may be taking,\u201d Matthews says. \u201cAs with any discussion about medication treatment options, reviewing the patient\u2019s medical and psychiatric history, allergies, current prescriptions, and over-the-counter medications\/supplements is important to make a treatment decision.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rittenhousepa.com\/about\/#pagnani\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chris Pagnani, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, psychiatrist, medical director, and founder at<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/rittenhousepa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says that psychiatrists often prescribe Wellbutrin and Vyvanse together. \u201cIt is not uncommon for Vyvanse to be prescribed for a patient with ADHD, who may have comorbid depression,\u201d he says.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, Dr. Pagnani cautions that Wellbutrin and Vyvanse should only be prescribed together by an experienced psychiatric provider. \u201cMental health care needs to be tailored to the individual, and as such, I have had many patients do quite well with this combination,\u201d he says. However, he\u2019s also found that this combination is not tolerable in some patients. In other patients, he deemed that Wellbutrin and Vyvanse together were simply not safe to try at all due to underlying medical vulnerabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"wellbutrin-and-vyvanse-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellbutrin and Vyvanse interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the combination of Wellbutrin and Vyvanse is safe and effective for most people, certain side effects are possible. In addition, people with certain medical conditions may be more vulnerable to adverse effects when taking Wellbutrin and Vyvanse together. Let\u2019s take a look at some of those concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"addiction\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Addiction<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research has found that Wellbutrin and Vyvanse have addictive qualities and can increase the risk of abuse. For example,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4162783\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellbutrin shares some qualities of amphetamines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are known to be addictive. Additionally, the main ingredient in Vyvanse, lisdexamfetamine dimesylate, is<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a607047.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">known to be habit-forming.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Addiction is one main concern that Dr. Pagnani has about taking Wellbutrin and Vyvanse together. \u201cBoth Wellbutrin and Vyvanse increase the availability of norepinephrine and dopamine (these medications work on similar pathways in the central nervous system), so there could be additive effects with taking these medications together,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"increased-risk-of-seizures\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased risk of seizures<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research has found that Wellbutrin may increase the risk of seizures, and the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2020\/020358s064lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA warns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that anyone with a history of a seizure disorder should not take Wellbutrin. In addition,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some links have been found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cochranelibrary.com\/cdsr\/doi\/10.1002\/14651858.CD013136.pub2\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between central nervous system stimulants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like Vyvanse and increased seizure activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Pagnani recommends that anyone with a history of seizures should not take Wellbutrin and Vyvanse together. \u201cWellbutrin and Vyvanse can increase an individual\u2019s risk of having seizures,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen you add these medications, that risk only becomes greater.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"additional-potential-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additional potential side effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=cbc8c074-f080-4489-a5ae-207b5fadeba3#:~:text=WELLBUTRIN%20SR%20300%20mg%2Fday,%2C%20tinnitus%2C%20and%20urinary%20frequency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellbutrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2017\/208510lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and some of these common <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> overlap. If you are taking these two medications together, you want to monitor yourself for these side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBoth medications have potential side effects of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tachycardia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (fast heart rate), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypertension<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (elevated blood pressure), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constipation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dry mouth<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insomnia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, increased anxiety, increased irritability, and others, so risks of these side effects also increase when taken together,\u201d Dr. Pagnani says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A rare but potentially very serious side effect to watch out for while taking these two medications together is serotonin syndrome, which occurs when the medication causes elevated levels of serotonin in your brain. \u201cI would monitor for signs of serotonin syndrome, including muscle rigidity, sweating, shivering, dizziness, overactive reflexes, agitation, tremors, dilated pupils, and abnormal vital signs,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matthews recommends.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"other-drug-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other drug interactions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are taking Wellbutrin or Vyvanse, you might want to know what other drugs you can safely take with these drugs. Here\u2019s what to know.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"wellbutrin-drug-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellbutrin drug interactions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Pagnani says that certain medications should not be taken with Wellbutrin. \u201cAs Wellbutrin slows down the liver from breaking down certain medications (medications broken down by the CYP2D6 enzyme), it may not be appropriate to take Wellbutrin with Strattera (atomoxetine, also utilized in ADHD), various antidepressants [Prozac (fluoxetine), Paxil (paroxetine), and Effexor ( venlafaxine)], and even several cardiovascular medications,\u201d he recommends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b> <\/b><b>Bupropion interactions to avoid<\/b><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"vyvanse-drug-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse drug interactions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications that shouldn\u2019t be taken with Vyvanse include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=704e4378-ca83-445c-8b45-3cfa51c1ecad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as Marplan, Nardil, and Parnate. Matthews recommends stopping a MAOI antidepressant at least 14 days before starting Vyvanse. She also recommends not taking Vyvanse with serotonergic drugs, including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SSRIs) like Zoloft (sertraline) and Lexapro (escitalopram), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SNRIs), and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tricyclic antidepressants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, due to the heightened risk of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin syndrome<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Matthews particularly cautions that medications like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluoxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should be approached with even greater care, recommending lower doses to mitigate potential drug interactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-take-wellbutrin-and-vyvanse-together\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to take Wellbutrin and Vyvanse together<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anytime you take Wellbutrin and Vyvanse together, you should do so under the careful watch of a healthcare professional. Your provider will likely watch you closely when you start taking these medications and may not give you a full dose. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your provider usually starts you on a low dose before moving to higher doses. \u201cIn general, it is recommended to start at a low dose and gradually increase the antidepressants,\u201d says Matthews.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You should be monitored for side effects as you increase your dose, which may need to be adjusted.
