However, breast cancer can also develop in those without any <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk factors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This article discusses <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breast cancer facts<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stats<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by age, sex, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ethnicity,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk factors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survival rates<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-breast-cancer\"><b>What is <\/b><b>breast cancer<\/b><b>?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breast cancer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">type of cancer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that develops in the breasts. It can start in the lobules, ducts, nipples, or blood vessels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cancer can spread to other parts of the body when it enters the blood or lymph system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/types\/breast-cancer\/about\/types-of-breast-cancer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Cancer Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explains the most common types of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breast cancer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ductal <\/b><b>carcinoma<\/b><b> in situ:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A non-invasive, pre-invasive, or stage 0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breast cancer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in which the cells that line the ducts are cancerous, but they have not reached nearby breast tissue. It can be cured.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Invasive <\/b><b>breast cancer<\/b><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cancers that affect the surrounding breast tissue. They may develop in the milk ducts or lobules.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People should discuss any potential symptoms and possible <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk factors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gilsonplasticsurgery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Aaron Gilson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon based in Portland, Oregon, says, \u201cThe first indication most women have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breast cancer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abnormal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mammogram<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/breast-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The use of mammograms has increased since the 1980s, which is why a lot of new <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breast cancer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cases are being diagnosed in developed countries, such as the U.S., the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands.
