Ozempic has two additional FDA-approved uses as well. If you\u2019re considering Ozempic or Mounjaro, you may wonder which is better for you, especially if the drugs\u2019 potential side effects are a factor.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-s-the-difference-between-ozempic-and-mounjaro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s the difference between Ozempic and Mounjaro?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main difference between Ozempic and Mounjaro is their active ingredient and how they work. Ozempic contains semaglutide, whereas Mounjaro contains tirzepatide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of their different ingredients, Ozempic and Mounjaro belong to overlapping but not identical drug classes. Semaglutide and tirzepatide are classified as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 agonists<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but since tirzepatide also targets a second receptor, it is classified as a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dual<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> GIP\/GLP-1 receptor agonist. Activating these receptors is what helps Ozempic and Mounjaro regulate blood sugar levels and reduce appetite.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic and Mounjaro are both FDA-approved for blood sugar control in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. Ozempic is also<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2025\/209637s025lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in adults with both Type 2 diabetes and heart disease, and to prevent the worsening of kidney disease and cardiovascular death in adults with Type 2 diabetes and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic kidney disease (CKD)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Mounjaro\u2019s starting dose is 2.5 mg, injected once weekly. The maximum<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro dose<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is 15 mg once weekly. But that doesn\u2019t mean Mounjaro is 10 times stronger than Ozempic\u2014their active ingredients work differently and require different dosages to achieve their effects. Your healthcare provider will prescribe a dosing schedule that aligns with your treatment plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>An important note: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic and Mounjaro are not FDA approved for weight loss. The brand-name weight loss drugs <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (semaglutide) and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (tirzepatide) contain the same active ingredients as Ozempic and Mounjaro, respectively, and are FDA approved for weight loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-common-side-effects-of-ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the common side effects of Ozempic?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include gastrointestinal issues such as nausea and diarrhea. In clinical trials, nausea was the most common side effect, with 16% of participants affected, based on the 0.5 mg dose (percentages vary slightly, depending on the dose). The next most commonly reported side effects were diarrhea (9%) and stomach pain (7%), followed by vomiting and constipation (both 5%). Some Ozempic users also report<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">muscle pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fatigue<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eye issues<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-common-side-effects-of-mounjaro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the common side effects of Mounjaro?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are also gastrointestinal. In clinical trials, nausea and diarrhea were the most commonly reported side effects, affecting 12% of Mounjaro users (based on the 5 mg dose; other doses may vary in the percentage affected). It may also be better for weight loss (an off-label use).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPatients do report fewer side effects with tirzepatide, though this is variable, and I have had patients with no side effects on both medications,\u201d says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/mir-b-ali\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mir Ali, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, board-certified general surgeon, bariatric surgeon and medical director of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/mir-b-ali\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In clinical trials, every side effect except constipation had a higher incidence rate in Ozempic than in Mounjaro. Six percent of Mounjaro clinical trial participants reported constipation, whereas only 5% of Ozempic clinical trial participants experienced constipation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for effectiveness,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/myfamilydoc.com\/providers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michelle Lin, DO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, family medicine provider and owner of My Family Doc in Las Vegas, Nevada, points to data suggesting that Mounjaro gets slightly better results than Ozempic:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Weight loss:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/fullarticle\/2821080\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 2024 study of 18,386 adults with overweight or obesity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tirzepatide users reduced their body weight by 15.3%, and semaglutide users reduced theirs by 8.3% after 12 months. \u201cOverall, Mounjaro has been shown to have higher rates of weight loss than Ozempic,\u201d concludes Dr. Lin. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2416394\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another 2025 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that people taking tirzepatide lost close to 50% more weight than people taking semaglutide.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Blood sugar management.<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2107519\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also suggests that tirzepatide lowers average blood glucose levels more significantly than semaglutide.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:
