However, that doesn\u2019t mean every young person who wants a GLP-1 gets a prescription, especially when the drug is used for weight loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGLP-1 medications like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aren\u2019t a first step,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/eatplantsmdcoach.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heather Gosnell, MD,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a pediatrician and plant-based health coach in Phoenix, Arizona. \u201cThey\u2019re for teens who have struggled to improve their health with lifestyle changes alone.\u201d She says clinicians must consider each patient\u2019s body mass index (BMI), blood lab results, and whether lifestyle modifications have been tried before prescribing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saxenda or Wegovy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to a child, adolescent, or adult.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"benefits-of-glp-1-use-in-children-and-adolescents\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benefits of GLP-1 use in children and adolescents<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers significant benefits for teens with obesity, including a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMcp2102062\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16% drop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in BMI and improvements in metabolic health, which may lower long-term disease risk,\u201d says Dr. Gosnell.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, treating an adolescent\u2019s obesity can improve their overall health now and in the future because <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obesity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> increases the risk of serious health problems, including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular disease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes mellitus, and certain types of cancer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"risk-of-glp-1-use-in-children-and-adolescents\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risk of GLP-1 use in children and adolescents<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1s work by suppressing appetite, which can be problematic for adolescents whose bodies are still growing. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4266867\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that nutrition is critical to healthy development during puberty. Dr.Gosnell says it\u2019s essential for prescribers to monitor growth and nutrition in adolescents on these medications carefully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another potential problem? Disordered eating. When it comes to adolescents, treating obesity without first completing a psychiatric evaluation \u201ccan sometimes cause more harm than good,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nevadamentalhealth.com\/our-psychiatrists\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sid Khurana, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, DFAPA, DFAACAP, a board-certified psychiatrist, clinical assistant professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Medicine, and medical director of Nevada Mental Health. \u201cIt can potentially <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaleatingdisorders.org\/glp-and-eating-disorders\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worsen weight obsession<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and risk in folks with anorexia,\u201d he adds.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"glp-1-use-in-older-adults\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 use in older adults<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is \u201cno absolute cutoff\u201d when it comes to GLP-1 use in older adults, and these medications are generally considered \u201csafe in seniors,\u201d according to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/mir-b-ali\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mir Ali<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a board-certified bariatric surgeon and medical director of MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center at Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California. Overall, GLP-1 use poses the same benefits for older adults as younger adults: Blood sugar control and weight management. That said, there are a few aging-related risks to understand before starting weight loss medications like Wegovy or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fall risk due to lost muscle mass<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Underdiagnosed hypoglycemia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nutritional deficiencies\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne of the biggest risks of GLP-1 agonist medications in the elderly population is loss of muscle<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mass because any<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss will lead to loss of muscle mass,\u201d says<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/cynthia-odogwu-md-02334252\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cynthia Odogwu, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a family and lifestyle medicine physician in Maryland. Dr. Ali agrees: \u201cLoss of muscle and bone loss can make someone more prone to falls.\u201d Falls are a major health concern for adults 65 and older, causing about 1 million hospitalizations per year, according to the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/falls\/data-research\/facts-stats\/index.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So while weight loss from GLP-1s can be a huge benefit for older adults with obesity, it\u2019s important to know that losing weight without adding exercise or resistance training to your routine can increase the risk of dangerous falls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypoglycemia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a serious potential side effect for anyone on a GLP-1. But <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4365959\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that hypoglycemia is underreported in older adults because <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms like confusion and fatigue<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are nonspecific or misinterpreted as dementia-related. Given that, though the risk of low blood sugar is not higher in older adults, the risk of complications is greater unless those patients commit to carefully monitoring blood sugar levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, there is a risk of malnutrition for older adults on GLP-1s. \u201cAs we age, we experience a decline in appetite,\u201d says Dr. Odogwu. \u201cOne of the successes of GLP-1 agonist medications is their ability to effectively suppress appetite. An elderly person who is treated with a GLP-1 agonist may then end up with significantly decreased food intake, which predisposes them to deficiency of important vitamins and minerals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line: It\u2019s important to discuss the benefits versus risks of GLP-1s with a healthcare provider before starting any new medication. Only a prescriber who understands a patient\u2019s medical history, health conditions, and other medications can determine whether a GLP-1 is the best medication for an older adult with diabetes or obesity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ozempic-age-limit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic age limit\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lower age limit for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) use is 18 because, according to Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Ozempic, it is<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ozempic.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cnot known\u201d whether Ozempic is safe and effective in children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There is no upper age limit associated with this drug.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"wegovy-age-limit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy age limit<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is approved for use in adolescents aged 12 and older and adults of all ages. There is no upper age limit for Wegovy use, but it\u2019s still important for older adults to talk to their healthcare providers about the risks of muscle loss and nutritional deficiencies while on this weight loss medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mounjaro-age-limit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro age limit<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Ozempic, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tirzepatide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is indicated for use in adults aged 18 and older. There is no definitive upper age limit for Mounjaro. In all cases, it\u2019s important to discuss age-specific health conditions and concerns with a healthcare professional before starting Mounjaro is important.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1s represent a new era of blood sugar management and weight loss benefits. Ongoing research suggests that<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> GLP-1s may expand<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into treatments for neurodegenerative conditions, gastrointestinal diseases, liver problems, kidney disease, and more. That said, GLP-1s are not right for everyone. Their appetite suppression effects can be risky for adolescents who need extra nourishment during puberty and older adults who might already have diminished appetites.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, only four brand-name GLP-1s are approved for use in pediatric and adolescent populations. All are approved for use in adult populations, with no set upper age limit. Research is ongoing, and access to GLP-1s may be expanding, so it\u2019s vital for patients to consult a healthcare provider who knows their medical history when determining whether a GLP-1 is right
