Here\u2019s what you need to know about Cigna\u2019s coverage of weight loss drugs like Saxenda and how to navigate the prior authorization process.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-cigna-cover-saxenda\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Cigna cover Saxenda?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain drug plans from Cigna may cover <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=3946d389-0926-4f77-a708-0acb8153b143\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saxenda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other weight loss medications, but it depends on the specific insurance policy and whether someone meets the criteria for coverage. According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/static.cigna.com\/assets\/chcp\/pdf\/coveragePolicies\/pharmacy\/ip_0206_coveragepositioncriteria_weight_loss_glp1.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drug Coverage Policy from March 2025<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, weight loss medications are not included in many drug benefit plans, including some Cigna employer, individual, and family plans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saxenda is covered only if it\u2019s considered medically necessary, which means the patient must meet certain criteria. It\u2019s replaced by Wegovy and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (tirzepatide), two GLP-1 agonists approved for weight loss. Cigna plans that use this drug list won\u2019t offer coverage for Saxenda. If you\u2019ve already been prescribed Saxenda, your coverage will continue through December 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a Cigna Medicare plan, it\u2019s unlikely you\u2019ll have coverage for Saxenda. This amount of medication would provide a one-month supply if taking a typical maintenance dose of 3 mg daily.
