In other words, it\u2019s common to need treatment with an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while lactating. It is often used to treat postpartum depression, and also to continue to treat depression when parents have a history of doing well with it. However, if you haven\u2019t taken Wellbutrin prior to breastfeeding, your provider might try another medication first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/infantrisk.com\/content\/antidepressant-use-while-breastfeeding-what-should-i-know\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First-line treatments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for depression while breastfeeding include<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellbutrin is not a first-line treatment for depression during lactation, but it\u2019s a valuable tool in the toolbox, Bergman says. It is often used when other antidepressants aren\u2019t recommended for a particular patient. \u201cWellbutrin is a go-to when patients have experience with SSRIs not working for them, need smoking cessation support, and or have responded well to it previously,\u201d explains Kelly Hobbs, PMHNP, a psychiatric nurse practitioner at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/neurowellnessspa.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neuro Wellness Spa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contrary to popular belief,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most prescription medications are<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">safe to take while breastfeeding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is the take-home message from both the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). The reason for this is that, most of the time, the amount of medication passed into breast milk is minimal and has few side effects in breastfed infants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there aren\u2019t large-scale clinical trials proving its safety, Wellbutrin is excreted into breast milk in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK470212\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insignificant amounts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning that it\u2019s likely to be safe for breastfeeding babies and unlikely to cause harm. \u201cOnly 0.2% of the overall dose transfers via breast milk,\u201d Hobbs says. \u201cThis low level is considered very safe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"side-effects-of-wellbutrin-while-breastfeeding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects of Wellbutrin while breastfeeding<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since such low levels of Wellbutrin are found in breast milk, it\u2019s not likely to cause negative side effects in babies. But there\u2019s very little research about specific side effects in babies from Wellbutrin and the use of bupropion during breastfeeding. Most of the research we have is based on small studies or case reports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/infantrisk.com\/content\/antidepressant-use-while-breastfeeding-what-should-i-know\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infant Risk Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, two babies whose breastfeeding parents took Wellbutrin developed seizures. It\u2019s not clear if these seizures were related to Wellbutrin. However, if your baby is at risk of seizures because of a family history or a medical condition, another medication may be preferable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As noted by the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/abm.memberclicks.net\/assets\/DOCUMENTS\/PROTOCOLS\/21-drug-dependency-protocol-english.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine (ABM)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Wellbutrin reaches its peak effect within three to four hours of taking it. It has a half-life of 21 hours, which means that\u2019s how long it takes for half of the medication to leave your breast milk. Overall, the ABM considers Wellbutrin \u201ccompatible with breastfeeding.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps most importantly, taking Wellbutrin can have positive side effects on breastfeeding parents who take it. Between<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1660-4601\/21\/5\/551\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5% and 26%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of parents experience<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">postpartum depression<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can have significant and serious impacts on both mental health and a parent\u2019s ability to care for their baby. For many of these parents, the use of antidepressants is crucial to their recovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUntreated depression poses a significant risk to both the mother and baby, which is why medication shouldn\u2019t automatically be avoided due to breastfeeding concerns,\u201d Hobbs says. \u201cIf you are currently taking psychiatric medication that seems to be working well and you feel stable on it, consult your provider before making any changes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bergman fully agrees with these sentiments, noting that treating mental health concerns during lactation is beneficial to everyone involved. \u201cWhen a parent\u2019s mental health improves, feeding outcomes, bonding, and overall confidence often improve too,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-take-wellbutrin-while-breastfeeding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to take Wellbutrin while breastfeeding<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most experts agree that there are no special precautions you need to take if you are breastfeeding while taking Wellbutrin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s no need to \u2018pump and dump\u2019 or time feeds around doses when taking Wellbutrin,\u201d Bergman says. \u201cMost parents take the standard prescribed dose (typically 150\u2013300 mg\/day) and continue nursing as usual.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are taking Wellbutrin for the first time, your provider will likely start with the lower 150 mg<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dose<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and gradually increase to 300 mg, if needed. \u201cBe sure to talk to your provider about the recommended dosage since it fluctuates per person,\u201d Hobbs recommends.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-wellbutrin-effective-for-postpartum-depression\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Wellbutrin effective for postpartum depression?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The research on Wellbutrin and postpartum depression is limited. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15817137\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">older, smaller study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looked at eight parents with postpartum depression who took Wellbutrin for eight weeks. Six out of eight patients experienced a decrease in depression symptoms, and three patients experienced remission from postpartum depression. In all, these patients tolerated Wellbutrin well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is promising, but a very small study. In general, when choosing<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> medications for postpartum depression, Hobbs says that treatment plans are best when tailored to a patient\u2019s individual history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUsing medications with the most safety data is recommended, but if Wellbutrin is the route for you, it\u2019s important for you to consider it with your healthcare professional,\u201d she says. \u201cWhile research on many psychiatric medications during pregnancy and breastfeeding is limited, your provider can discuss with you the risks and benefits to help determine what\u2019s safest for you and your baby.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-the-safest-antidepressant-for-breastfeeding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the safest antidepressant for breastfeeding?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, SSRIs like<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoloft (sertraline)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paxil (paroxetine)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are considered most compatible with breastfeeding because they have the most research behind them and have very low levels in breast milk. \u201cBut \u2018safest\u2019 really means what\u2019s most effective and manageable for the individual,\u201d Bergman emphasizes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Hobbs, after sertraline and paroxetine,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celexa (citalopram)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lexapro (escitalopram)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are second-line antidepressants for breastfeeding because they have only slightly higher infant exposure than sertraline and paroxetine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hobbs also emphasizes, though, that the safest antidepressant varies from one person to another. \u201cIf you are stable on medication during pregnancy, then continuing it postpartum can avoid destabilization,\u201d she says. \u201cMaking sure to take your medication consistently is imperative for continued results.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most experts say that it\u2019s safe to take Wellbutrin while breastfeeding. Only minimal amounts of it are detectable in breast milk. But there are few studies looking at the safety of Wellbutrin in breastfeeding babies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each breastfeeding parent and baby is different. That\u2019s why it\u2019s vital to seek medical advice from a healthcare provider or pharmacist when deciding whether or not to take a particular medicine while breastfeeding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><svg
