By definition, someone with Type 1 diabetes doesn\u2019t produce insulin, so they need insulin injections throughout the day. Mounjaro contains no insulin and isn\u2019t FDA approved to treat Type 1 diabetes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, insulin isn\u2019t a first-line treatment for people in the early stages of Type 2 diabetes. Instead, healthcare professionals tend to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK425702\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">start treating Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with lifestyle changes (e.g., diet and exercise) and drugs like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metformin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or Mounjaro.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMounjaro is an excellent choice for Type 2 diabetics, and I often use it as a first-line treatment,\u201d Dr. Brown says. \u201cIt\u2019s very effective in lowering glucose levels and also causes weight loss.\u201d If necessary, insulin may be added to the treatment protocol to effectively stabilize blood sugar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"injection-frequency\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injection frequency<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both insulin and Mounjaro are delivered through subcutaneous injections. Dr. Brown says she considers adding insulin only if the patient\u2019s glucose levels remain uncontrolled. \u201cPatients on both have to be very cautious about hypoglycemia,\u201d she reiterates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combining Mounjaro with insulin reduces the amount of injected insulin that\u2019s required, and Dr. Warren says this can be beneficial for people who experience adverse side effects with insulin, such as weight gain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-know-whether-mounjaro-is-right-for-you\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to know whether Mounjaro is right for you<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talking to your healthcare provider is the best way to know whether Mounjaro is right for you. They\u2019ll consider your personal health history, family health history, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">current symptoms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, experience with other diabetes medications, and more to prescribe a treatment that\u2019s safe and effective. Here are some of the things they might consider before prescribing Mounjaro.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-insulin-alone-isn-t-working\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Insulin alone isn\u2019t working<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people successfully control their Type 2 diabetes with regular insulin injections. For others, insulin alone isn\u2019t enough. Other medications can be prescribed in addition to or instead of insulin, including Mounjaro.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your healthcare provider has <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many different types of Type 2 diabetes treatments<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to choose from, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of all the GLP-1 receptor agonists currently available, Mounjaro is considered <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/384\/bmj-2023-076410\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the most effective for controlling blood sugar levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Mounjaro was found to be more effective for weight loss than diet and exercise alone (average of 2.2 pounds lost), semaglutide when added to metformin (e.g., <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; average of 12.5 pounds lost), insulin degludec when added to metformin (e.g., <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tresiba<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; average of 4.2 pounds gained), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insulin glargine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when added to metformin, sulfonylurea, or SGLT2 inhibitor (average of 3.7 pounds gained), and basal insulin in general (average of 3.5 pounds gained). People lost more weight on higher <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doses of Mounjaro<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-you-aren-t-at-risk-for-contraindicated-conditions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. You aren\u2019t at risk for contraindicated conditions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro isn\u2019t safe for people with a personal or family history of certain thyroid cancers (specifically medullary thyroid carcinoma) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia, Type 2 (MEN2).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may include pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), kidney injury, gallbladder disease, and severe gastrointestinal symptoms, people with preexisting issues of the pancreas, kidney, gallbladder, or gastrointestinal tract may want to consider an alternative treatment. In some cases, the benefits of Mounjaro may outweigh the potential risks. Your healthcare team should closely monitor your health for serious side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal studies suggest that Mounjaro may cause serious congenital disabilities, but this drug hasn\u2019t been thoroughly studied in people who are pregnant or trying to conceive. Talk to your healthcare provider right away if you become pregnant while taking Mounjaro.
