However, it was not more effective than standard pain relievers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9536948\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2022 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 90 patients getting root canals found that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregabalin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a different prescription drug, was more effective at relieving pain than <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gabapentin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At 72 hours after the procedure, patients who received <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregabalin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported 92.1% <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pain relief<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while patients who received <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gabapentin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported 87.6% <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pain relief<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many cases, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gabapentin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is prescribed together with over-the-counter (OTC) drugs such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">postherpetic neuralgia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, pain associated with shingles, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gabapentin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seems to decrease the release of certain pain signals in the brain,\u201d says Dr. Nguyen. In other words, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gabapentin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may reduce the sensation of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dental pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 the ache of your nerve-related <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toothache<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 but it\u2019s not fixing the root cause.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doesn\u2019t heal the nerves. It mainly helps to mask the pain,\u201d confirms Aaron Bulleigh, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DDS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a doctor of dental surgery at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.desertspringsdentalcare.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Desert Springs Dental Care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt makes the pain more manageable, like turning down the volume on a loudspeaker, but it doesn\u2019t fix the underlying problem with the nerves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-does-gabapentin-take-to-work-for-tooth-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does gabapentin take to work for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tooth pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no established time frame for how long it would take for gabapentin to begin to relieve a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toothache<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
