Kidney problems<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/fullarticle\/2544880\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicates that folic acid may help slow the progression of chronic kidney disease. People with kidney disease should discuss the appropriate use of folic acid supplements with their healthcare provider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"who-s-at-risk-for-folic-acid-overload\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who\u2019s at risk for folic acid overload?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone who\u2019s taking folic acid supplements should be cautious about taking the appropriate amount, as recommended by their healthcare provider.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile we still recommend folic acid supplementation in the pre-conception period and first trimester, it\u2019s important to be mindful of your folic acid intake, especially if you are consuming high amounts of folic acid-fortified products,\u201d D\u2019Iorio says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with certain health conditions and treatments that require supplementation with folic acid should also be mindful. Take the total supplement dosage and the dietary folic acid into account. When shopping for food, look for the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nyaspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/nyas.13499\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enriched<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d label that indicates that foods like breakfast cereals contain a certain amount of added folic acid.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"taking-folic-acid-safely\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking folic acid safely<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before you start taking any news supplements, including folic acid, it\u2019s important to understand if you even need to take one.
