When hydralazine relaxes the blood vessels, it can increase the heart rate, causing the heart to work harder\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acc.org\/Latest-in-Cardiology\/ten-points-to-remember\/2015\/03\/31\/11\/38\/Treatment-of-Hypertension-in-Patients-With-Coronary-Artery-Disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potentially worsening angina<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (chest pain) and even possibly<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/drugs\/20177-hydralazine-tablets\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leading to heart attacks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s also contraindicated in people with damage to the mitral valve from rheumatic fever.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"hypotension-and-other-serious-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypotension and other serious side effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned above, in rare cases, hydralazine can cause hypotension\u2014even severe hypotension with rapid IV administration. Additionally, it can cause fluid retention, tachycardia, blood disorders, and lupus-like symptoms.
