5 Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me About Breastfeeding

While there were many phases of parenting that I wish I had been more prepared for, nursing is the biggie.

When I began nursing I had the support of my local La Leche League. They proved to be a wonderful resource, but many of the women were older and had more conservative world views than I did. There were some things I didn’t feel comfortable talking to them about, and as a result, I learned many things the hard way.

My son is nearly a year and a half old today. At this stage, we nurse once or twice a day, without any trouble—but it wasn’t always this easy. At the beginning, in fact, it was so hard that even though I’d gone into motherhood determined to breastfeed, I almost gave up entirely. If I’d known all this ahead of time, I wouldn’t have been so hard on myself.
