5 Times Women Stole the Show on the First Night of the DNC
1. Michelle Obama Reminded Us Why America is The Best
In her speech last night at the DNC (which, Melania Trump was no doubt taking notes on), the First Lady said: “I watch my daughters—two beautiful, intelligent, black women—playing with their dogs on the White House lawn. And because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters, and all our sons and daughters, now take for granted that a woman can be President of the United States.” The first lady, who has served as a powerful role model for strong, intelligent women everywhere for the past eight years, brought the crowd to their feet during her time behind the podium when she spoke about the type of leaders she wants to see in office: “Leaders like Hillary Clinton who has the guts and the grace to keep coming back and putting those cracks on that highest and hardest glass ceiling until she finally breaks through, lifting all of us along with her,” she said.
2. Demi Lovato Got Real About Mental Health
Before completely slaying a performance of her song “Confident,” the singer, who has openly struggled with bipolar disorder, spoke about the importance of focusing on mental health issues—a topic the Clinton campaign has been very vocal about. “Like millions of Americans, I am living with mental illness,” she said. “But I am lucky. I had the resources and support to get treatment at a top facility. Unfortunately, too many Americans from all walks of life don’t get help, whether they fear the stigma or cannot afford treatment,” she continued. “This is not about politics, it’s simply the right thing to do.”
3. Elizabeth Warren Stumped for Equality
Much like Clinton, Warren has fought relentlessly for equal rights for women during her time in office. In her speech last night, she focused on the path forward and what a female president would mean for the state of women’s rights. “We believe, and I can’t believe I have to say this in 2016, in equal pay for equal work and a woman’s right to control over her own body,” she said. Preach, girl. “Hillary will fight for women and we are with her.”
4. Sarah Silverman Took a Stand Against #BernieOrBust
Silverman had previously been a vocal Sanders supporter. But when she took the stage last night at the DNC, just like Sanders, she threw her support behind Team Hil. “Hillary is our Democratic nominee and I will proudly vote for her,” she said. And then she got straight-up real with the crowd. “Can I just say to the “Bernie or bust” people, you’re being ridiculous,” she said. That’s the Silverman we all know and love.
5. Eva Longoria Spoke the Truth About Immigration
Longoria, who is a ninth generation American from Texas, got fired up about Donald Trump’s rhetoric on immigration. “When Donald Trump calls us criminals and rapists, he is insulting American families,” the actress said. “My father isn’t a criminal or a rapist. In fact, he’s a United States veteran.” Mic drop.
