Constant connection, however, can also fuel anxiety, especially when you’re about to turn in for the night. “I find I get anxious at bedtime (I’ve had sleep issues since I was a child), so I turn off my phone an hour before I want to go to sleep,” says Larry D. Rosen, PhD, professor emeritus in the psychology department at California State University, Dominguez Hills and author of The Distracted Mind: Ancient Brains in a High-Tech World. “I’ll read a book, preferably on paper, so I’m not getting the blue light from screens that turns off melatonin and releases awakening cortisol.”
