It has long been rumored that being in a relationship is bad for your waistline.
If you piled on the pounds after meeting your significant other, you are not the only one.
A new survey has shown that people in relationships gain an average of 4lbs a year, swapping salads and skinny lattes with steak dinners and wine.
But don’t panic, the key tipping point does not occur in the honeymoon phase.
Just over half the women polled said their own weight gain had caused their partner to pile on the pounds
More than half of couples surveyed said they experienced weight gain after three years of dating, in the time period called ‘the comfort zone’.
Just 18 per cent of couples reported significant weight gain during the ‘honeymoon period’ when they first fell in love.

The average weight gain is 4lbs a year, which means that they are each more than a stone heavier after seven years.
Two-thirds of couples (62 per cent) who put on weight do so together – with one picking up the other’s bad habits.
Women appear exert a stronger influence on a couple’s weight gain.
Two-thirds of couples who put on weight do so together, often during the third year of their relationship
Just over half the women polled (54 per cent) said their own weight gain had caused their partner to fill out, too.
Only 28 per cent of men said their weight gain had inspired their partner to pile on the pounds.
The results come from a new survey of 1,000 couples by leading British diet company, Forzadiet.com.
It also found that many couples who get fat together also lose weight together.
More than half those surveyed (56 per cent) said they had lost weight together by going on a diet at the same time – most typically at New Year.
And 61 per cent said they found it easier to lose weight if their partner was battling the bulge at the same time.
Forzadiet.com managing director Lee Smith said: ‘Falling in love is the most wonderful thing in the world.
‘But once the first flushes of love pass many couples do settle into a comfort zone and that can lead to them letting themselves go – with predictable results for both.
‘But we are finding increasing number of couples embarking on weight loss programmes together. They are far more effective when dieting together – a problem shared is a problem halved when it comes to weight loss.’
