A pregnancy test that can flushed down the toilet after a woman has seen the results will be available to buy next year.

Lia is the first test that can be disposed of in this way – avoiding the need to hide the white stick.

It works in the same way as a regular test – reacting to urine by displaying two lines for pregnant and one line for a negative result.

Its manufacturers say it is 99 per cent accurate on the first day of a woman’s missed period and results take just a few minutes to show.

It also has a wider collection area for peeing on than the usual testing kits for ease of use. It’s extremely light and weighs less than six squares of standard toilet paper.

The test is set to sold by Amazon in mid-2018 with an expected price of $9 (£6.70) to $22 (£16.39).

HOW DO PREGNANCY TESTS WORK?

All over-the-counter pregnancy tests look for the presence of hCG – Human Chorionic Gonadotropin – in your urine.

The body produces hCG, a hormone, when a fertilized egg attaches to the uterus.

hCG levels rise rapidly, doubling every few days.

High hCG levels are a reliable indicator of pregnancy in most individuals.

Lia is made from paper, not plastic, so it has a lower environmental impact.

Made from the same natural plant fibres as toilet paper, it is designed to repel water for long enough to take the test.

Unlike other tests, it won’t add two-million pounds of plastic to landfills every year.

The test can also be added to compost as it is biodegradable in soil.

The has been little innovation in over 30 years with pregnancy test – with the exception of an added digital component.

‘It’s been the same stick test since 1987, and that’s kind of crazy,’ co-founder Bethany Edwards explained to the crowd at TechCrunch Disrupt Berlin.

It was recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is set to sold by Amazon in mid-2018 with an expected price of $9 (£6.70) to $22 (£16.39).
