Government to pay rent for public rental housing tenants in August and September

Hong Kong (HKSAR) – The following is issued on behalf of the Housing Authority:

Public rental housing (PRH) tenants (including interim housing licencees) of the Hong Kong Housing Authority (HA) will not be required to pay all or part of the rent/licence fees for August and September 2013.

To help easethe community’s burden, the Financial Secretary announced in the Budget in February this year a series of one-off measures, including paying two months’ rent for PRH tenants.

“The Government will pay the rent in full for tenants and licencees of HA paying normal rent. As for tenants and licencees paying additional rent, the Government will pay on their behalf the net rent for two months and they are required to pay the additional rent,” a spokesman for the HA said today (July 21).

The HA will notify all the tenants and licencees of this arrangement.

Funding for the rent payment was approved by the Finance Committee of the Legislative Council in June 2013. About 710 000 HA tenants will benefit from the two months’ rent payment by the Government, amounting to about $2.054 billion.
