FEHD orders two restaurants to suspend business

Hong Kong (HKSAR) – The Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene has ordered two restaurants, one in Mong Kok and another in Wong Tai Sin, to suspend business for 21 and 14 days respectively.

The operators repeatedly breached the Food Business Regulation by illegally extending the food business area and allowing staff to store food utensils in open space.

Encore Kitchen, located at shop 4 on the ground floor of Fok Kwan Building at No. 4-10 Boundary Street in Mong Kok, was ordered to suspend business from today (July 21) to August 10, while “Tai Cheung”, located on the ground floor at No. 9 Tsz Wah Lane in Tsz Wan Shan in Wong Tai Sin, was ordered to suspend business from today to August 3.

“Four convictions for illegal extension of the food business area and allowing staff to store food utensils in open space were recorded against Encore Kitchen between February and April this year.

A total fine of $7,200 was levied and 65 demerit points were registered against the licensee. The contraventions resulted in seven-day and 14-day business suspensions running consecutively,” a spokesman for the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department said.

Regarding “Tai Cheung”, the spokesman noted that two convictions for illegal extension of the food business area were recorded this January and May. A total fine of $5,400 was levied by the court and 30 demerit points were registered against the licensee under the department’s demerit points system.

The contraventions resulted in the 14-day business suspension.

“The licensee of ‘Tai Cheung’ had a record of two convictions for the same offence in May and September last year. A total fine of $4,900 was levied and 30 demerit points were registered. The breaches led to business suspension for seven days last December,” he added.

The spokesman reminded licensees of food premises to comply with the Food Business Regulation or their licences could be suspended or cancelled.

Licensed food premises are required to exhibit a sign indicating that the premises have been licensed at a conspicuous place near the main entrance.

A list of licensed food premises is also available on the FEHD’s website (www.fehd.gov.hk/english/licensing/licence-type.html).
