Here’s How Much Money Men Think Should Be Spent on an Engagement Ring

Luckily, the pressure’s off both sexes this Valentine’s Day: According to an online survey of more than 1,500 adults from the American Express Spending Saving Tracker, only eight percent of Americans are expecting or planning marriage proposals this V-Day.

Not only that, the V-Day proposal seems to be on its way out: Last year, only 12 percent of people surveyed said they planned to get engaged on the day.

And it looks like women might want to either lower their ring expectations or find a super-generous guy.  While women say $2,731 is an “appropriate” amount to spend on an engagement ring, men think that number should be more like … $1,991. (Worth pointing out, a 2014 survey from The Knot found that the average engagement ring costs $5,855.)

Of course, all that truly matters is that you’ve found someone to love. And that it’s not cubic zirconia.
