Money-making skills develop in the womb, study claims
- Scientists found men with much a longer ring finger than index finger earn more
- It is the opposite for women: those with a smaller finger-length ratio earn more
- This ratio reflects the amount of testosterone one was exposed to in the womb

High earners develop their money-making skills in the womb, new research claims.
Scientists have found evidence to show men with shorter index fingers and longer ring fingers are far more likely to achieve financial success.
This ratio reflects the level of perinatal testosterone said man was exposed to in the womb during pregnancy.
For women, however, the researchers found the opposite: the smaller the ratio between the two fingers (i.e., the lower their exposure to testosterone), the more they earned.
While the ring-index finger ratio (or, the 2D:4D ratio) has been studied before, this study by Russia’s Higher School of Economics is the first to relate it to personal income.

HOW TO MEASURE YOUR FINGER RATIO
For readers, there are several ways to figure out their 2D:4D ratio.
The new research uses an electronic caliper.
Respondents were asked to place their hands on a flat surface, palms facing upwards, and straighten out their fingers.
A researcher then measured the length of the index and ring fingers on both hands.
This measurement should be taken from the center of the fold between the finger and palm up to the very tip of the finger.
That way the upper lip of the caliper does not press against the finger.
For the study, published in the journal Economics and Human Biology, the researchers carried out an analysis of data on around 2,000 people.
The participants, an even split of men and women, were aged between 25 and 60.
The researchers measured each person’s 2D:4D ratio using a specialized apparatus.
They also asked them a number of questions concerning income and salaries.
The results showed a negative correlation between the income and 2D:4D ratios of women.
In other words, the higher the salary, the lower the ratio for women.
The effect was negative even when taking into account salary predictors such as gender, age, education level, job position, and the position’s economic sector.
For men it was the opposite – except for those small-ratioed men who had a high level of education.
Income is merely the latest aspect of life scientists have analyzed in connection with the 2D:4D ratio.
According to research last year, those with an index finger longer than their ring finger are likely to be bad at sports but better at verbal memory tasks, a new study says.

But men and women with shorter index fingers compared to their ring finger are less anxious, better at mentally demanding 3D-rotation tasks and better at sport.
Studies also show high levels of testosterone in the womb correlate with an increased risk of developing diseases that are more common in men, such as ADHD, Tourette’s and autism.
Low levels of testosterone are associated with an increased risk of developing diseases that are more common in women, like anxiety and depression.

Those who do not fall into either of these categories, with index and ring fingers the same length, are more likely to be faithful, according to a study last year.
In contrast, those with a longer ring finger, pictured, could be more likely to cheat.
Researchers have said that while hormone exposure could not predict the behavior of every individual, the link meant finger length could help identify people who are likely to be more promiscuous.
