‘Why I Think This Disney Princess-Inspired Lingerie Is SO Wrong’

The lingerie’s creator, Yandy.com, did a pretty good job of capturing the looks of Belle, Ariel, Cinderella, Pocahontas, Elsa, Jasmine, and Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) in its lingerie sets, but it’s super icky that the animated characters we watched as kids are being so hyper-sexualized now. Even pervier: Many of the Princesses were teenagers in these movies (Ariel was only 16, remember?).

Not to mention that the characters they based their designs on are predominantly damsels in distress. Disney has made a big effort to create strong, “I don’t need a man to save me” princesses in recent years (Merida, Moana, to name a few) yet looks inspired by those characters are noticeably MIA.

Yandy is hardly the first company to capitalize on the demographic of women who LOVE all things Disney. In the past few years we’ve seen a Disney Princess collaboration from MAC makeup and the growing phenomenon of Disney-themed weddings. The Emma Watson version of Beauty and the Beast has raked in more than $900 million to date. In fact, Disney was recently named the “Most Intimate Brand” among Millennials in MBLM’s Brand Intimacy 2017 Report.

Psychologist Jean Twenge, Ph.D., author of Generation Me, sees this lingerie as the next step in this trend. “It’s a product of Millennials’ ‘do what you want’ attitude combined with their longing for childhood,” she says.

But for some people (myself included), the barely-there underthings take nostalgia too far. The guys we polled at Men’s Health weren’t super into the context of these saucy duds coming from children’s movies, either. “This is some Freud-type sh*t right here. What’s next, Teletubby thongs?” asked senior video producer Micheal Sneeden. Brand editor Dean Stattmann agreed. “Unless you can come up with detailed backstories about how these tween princesses grew up to become consenting legal adults, I’m out.” (Spice up your sex live instead with our favorite vibrator from the Women’s Health Boutique.)

We asked men how they really feel about farting in a relationship:

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with wearing sexy lingerie, especially if it makes you feel fierce. But why, in 2017, are we still getting the message that very young, mostly helpless princesses are what’s considered seductive—and that it’s okay to ogle scantily clad teenagers? We can’t give that a pass. There’s tons of lush lingerie out there to choose from that celebrates grown-up women. I’ll be buying that, and leaving the Disney dress-up to my daughters.
